Regression in chewing skills after the stomach flu?

DS is 15 months old and had the stomach flu on Wednesday. We started with solids again on Thursday as he was keeping pedialyte down and seemed to be feeling a ton better. However, at least once a day since Thursday, he has gagged on food he normally has no problem chewing and then vomited all over the place.

Our theories are 2 fold: 1) He still has a touch of the stomach flu and is just kind of barfy; 2) since he has gagged on something before he chucked, his teeth are sore from teething and he is taking shortcuts in chewing.

Can any experienced moms enlighten this rookie?

  • We had norovirus not long after new years and it takes a while after they recover for their bodies to heal - everything gets inflamed and they actually can lose the enzyme to digest dairy (per our pedi) so maybe something dairy is setting him off? Also certain textures definitely would cause the gag afterwards and a few foods he ate while he was sick are still hit or miss. If he was only sick Weds I'd stick w/ bland stuff w/ texture he prefers until the vomiting stops, he may just not be ready yet. We pushed it when DS seemed better and I gave him some stir fry, thinking that it was vegs so no big deal but yeah... up it all came. Back to bananas, toast & applesauce we went.

  • Thanks for your response. We have gone back to blander foods and even just spoon feed him some soft stuff and purees last night for dinner. We will take it easy this week and give him time to heal.

  • Hope he feels better soon - it sucks when they get so sick and there isn't much you cna do for them
