Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sick and not eating

My lo has a cold this week and leading up to it she was starting to get very fussy with foods. Then this week would only eat toast or baby cereal. Maybe some banana. She's starting to drink cm again, but mostly water. She literally won't even touch anything else. Will this pass? I can't possibly only give her bread and baby cereal/oatmeal.

Re: Sick and not eating

  • It passed for my LO.  A couple of her colds have had her eating less.  Hydration is the most important, so I'd err on the side of more bottles/nursing than trying to make up solids.  Think of how you feel when you're sick, sometimes I don't want to eat, especially if I have post nasal drip (which most babies get because they don't know to blow their noses).  GL!

  • My son just went through this when he caught RSV. The doctor in the hospital recommended offering apple juice throughout the day to keep him hydrated.
  • My daughter is just getting over RSV w/an ear infection and she was OK eating solids but wouldn't drink much formula because it was making her cough more.  Our doctor said we had to push the pedialyte (give bottles of pedialyte instead of formula) because hydration was more important than nutrition.  We did this for about 4 days and it really helped, and LO didn't starve to death or anything.

She also advised against juice and water during this time because they don't have the electrolyte balance.  I'd ask your pedi.  Good luck, it's so awful to have a sick baby  Sad
