Baby Names

Lyn(n)

When is Lyn or Lynn acceptable? I have posted a few times about our future first daughter's name being Emmalyn(n), and the only reason for that spelling is because my husband's family uses the middle name of Lyn or the suffix of -lyn or -lynn.

In you opinion, is my husband's family tradition an acceptable reason for spelling it like Emmalyn(n)? How would you spell the name Emmalyn(n)?

I put the parentheses around the second "n" because we aren't sure if we want to use one "n" or two.

Re: Lyn(n)

  • emmalyn.

    emmalynn.

i think i like the single N best.  the double N just seems like a two-names-squished-into-one name and i'm generally not a fan of names like that.

when i was a kid, i used to really like the name emelyn.  same kind of deal, different spelling.  looking back, i'm kind of impressed at my progressive adolescent naming skills :)

  • I don't care for either Emmalyn or Emmalynn, even with the family spelling connection.

    What about Emmaline Lynn?

  • another thing to consider - do you intend to pronounce it with a "lynn" sounding ending, or would you rather it be a "line" ending?

if it was me, i'd want to pronounce it "line" so i wouldn't use the -lyn spelling.  i also think emmaline (which is a lovely name!!) is too much of a mouthful with lynn immediately after it as the middle name.

evelyn?  that could be a nice name option.  i know an aralyn too.  not as much of a fan (it kind of seems like a gameboy fantasy game name)

Well, we want to use "lyn" not "line" since the -lyn/-lynn is a family tradition in my husband's family. I like the tradition, so using the "line" wouldn't really mean anything to us.

I do like Evelyn, but it is a bit too common in my area. I like the uncommon-ness of Emmalyn (I don't know any IRL), and it's a real name...

  • I would spell it Emmeline.

But if you're set on -lyn(n), I would go with Emmalynn.
