Dads & Dads-to-be

Any Dads to be gaining weight?

I'm a first time father to be and I couldn't be more excited. However one thing I'm not overly excited about is the amount of weight I've put on. We are at the halfway point next week and I have gained more weight than my fianc. Last month I was adding a pound a week. I did read that it is common for us guys to add some weight during the pregnancy, but 15 lbs in 4.5 months??? Just wondering if any other Dads to be are experiencing this?

I have not gained any weight.  Seems like I should've given how we've been eating.

  • I gained 5 pounds during the second half of her pregnancy, plus a few more in the two months after since it was tough to leave the house (except to go get takeout).  we expect it to be much easier the second time around now that we know the traps.

there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
  • My wife and I were losing weight before she got pregnant - so we're hoping that will continue, well - for me at least. Her goal is to not gain more then the baby weight.

We're 7 weeks and I'm down 4 lbs in that time. So hopefully you don;t find the weight I am losing.

  • I have gained about 5, mostly because I was doing p90x twice daily previously and I eat when the wife eats so she doesnt feel awkward.

I still work out at lunch at work so I am not a total slug.

You should be ok if you are careful. One trick I use is I eat when my wife eats but I will have a salad or tuna or veggies.

  • During the first trimester I wasn't working out and my wife was trying to eat anything that she could keep down.  Mainly that consisted of bland mushy things like beans which meant many trips to Taco Bell and subsequent weight gain for me.  I haven't had the best cholesterol in the past so I started P90X again and I'm down almost 10 pounds since early February.

My wife is slowly starting to ease out of the nausea so in the last week or so it's been easier for her to eat better.  I purposely signed up for Tough Mudder and a couple 5k's in the next few months in order to give myself incentive to get in shape.  Without a clear and defined goal I find that it's just too easy for me to sit around and eat fast food.

  • I have blimped up about 15 pounds since my wife was pregnant and now 6 months into fatherhood.

It got so bad that I discovered at my physical last week that my cholesterol is through the roof...every number is horrible.  My doctor busted out the, "dude, you are way to old for this" card on me even, and told me he is giving me one year to take care of it or it is meds for me.

So, starting this morning, lifestyle change is started, big time!  My big vices are candy, cookies (oreos) and ice cream.  Those items are gone.  Butter is gone.  I am tracking my diet closely, with a spreadsheet and everything.  Exercise will also be tracked on that spreadsheet.  I need to lose about 30 pounds if I follow BMI.  But for now, I will take losing 10-15 by the end of spring.

We will also start bike rides every night after work as well.  Those numbers scared the crap out of me.  I have always been very active my whole life, playing sports and do all kinds of activities.  That stopped for a minute, and I see the results of that.  No more!

  • I don't wanna talk about it!

Although it was to be expected, my gut is still taking a toll on my self-esteem!

We're still working through the 1st trimester, and am already working through my 5th ice cream pale!

  • Well at least I'm not the only one with an ice cream problem. I go to all the baby checkups and often get on the scale at the same time she does. I'm afraid of what it might say next week. I've gained weight so fast that my stomach was hurting from stretching so much and so fast. Nothing fits any more either. Not only are we buying maternity clothes for mumma But bigger pants and shirts for me. I'm hoping that once the weather warms up we can get out more for walks and at the least stop the weight gain. I got a gut so fast and already quite large that it's made simple things as sleeping different. I don't want to be the guy that just accepts being the fat kid. Yet with all the things going on it's hard to find the extra time and energy to make better life style changes. It's too easy to grab junk food in a hurry or go to bed on a full stomach because it's late when I eat dinner and I'm exhausted from the day.
