Preemies

Heart murmur

We had ds's 9 month well visit. The pedi said everything looks great but he heard a small heart murmur. This is the first time it was seen and he said it wasn't a big concern but referred us to a pediatric cardiologist.
Anyone have any experience ? Should I be freaking out?

Re: Heart murmur

  • DS had a PDA that closed during the NICU so my heart stopped for a min when his GI pointed out a small murmur in Dec. His pedi said they're still common and usually benign but referred us to a ped cardiologist to have it looked it and rule out major issues. By the time we made an appt and saw him about 2 months later (I kept delaying because I thought if I ignored it, it would go away?) it had actually cleared up. But the cardiologist was awesome. He walked us thru the whole thing and was telling us what he was looking at on the echocardiogram the whole time.

So, in my experience, while scary, it wasn't a major concern and my pedi just said today "at least now we both have peace of mind."

  • Thank you! The pedi didn't sound all that concerned but of course my mind started to race.

  • Im glad your pedi is being cautious and sending you to a cardiologist, but try not to worry.  I know easier said than done!

The cardiologist will likely do an echocardiogram, an ekg and and maybe some bloodwork.

My DD had a PDA, a pulmonary fistula, and pulmonary hypertension but thankfully after her PDA was closed in the NICU she didnt need any medications, surgeries or treatments... just monitoring.

  • Don't freak out.  One of my twins has an heart murmur.  He has an atrial septal defect.  He's now seeing a pedi cardiologist once a year to make sure it closes on it's own.  It's very benign and doesn't seem to effect him at all, the cardiogist doesn't seem to think it's a big deal at all.  As long as his closes he will never need an intervention and will live a completely normal life. They will likely do an EKG, exam, and an echo at you appointment.
  • thanks guys... we haven't told anyone IRL because we don't want to scare them so I needed someone to tell me not to worry! we are calling monday for an appointment for the cardiologist and I'm praying that it's nothing to be concerned about. From the little I've read it seems like there are a lot of "innocent" murmurs so hopefully this is something that either resolves on its own or is innocent and something we do not have to be too concerned with!
