moms of big babies

My DS is expected to be over 10lbs. He is weighing in around 8#9oz now at 37 weeks. I know these estimates can be off, but I've had weekly BPPs and growth u/s and they have been pretty consistant. I am just wondering, if you had a large baby at birth, did they always tend to be a little bigger? I'm trying to get some summer clothes for the baby, DS1 was a winter baby so we have nothing summery. I'm wondering if I should get 3-6 months or 6-9 months. He will be 3 months old when summer rolls around here in WNY, but I wonder how big he's going to be...

DS was always big, he's 2.5 and wears a 4t top and 3t bottom

Re: moms of big babies

  • They told me that my DD would be over 10lbs but she ended up being 8lbs 6 oz. That being said, she never wore newborn clothes (maybe for a week or so) and went straight to 0-3 months. I would get 3-6 months unless you expect him to be tall.

  • My son has always been in the 90th percentile for height and weight, but he is currently wearing true-to-size clothes mostly. Some 18 mo stuff, but he can still fit in some 9 mo stuff too.

Our friends had a big baby too (10lb+ at birth) who is now a string bean - very very tall but super spindly!

  • I wouldn't buy too much of anything.

My LO was 6 lbs 14 oz at birth, and he weighs over 18 lbs now at not even 4 months. We are in 9 and 12 mo. clothing. I have summer clothes he never wore because it was too cold and he is now wearing stuff I thought he could use in the fall when he would be almost a year old.

Babies are unpredictable when it comes to size. Whatever you buy, maybe keep the tags on?

  • DD measured the same at 37 weeks. She was 9.3 born at 38 weeks. She has evened out a bit she is 2. As a baby she was always in the bigger size clothes. I would say at 3 months she was wearing 36 but by 5 months she was wearing 69. This baby is also expected to be close to 10 I am having him March 18. I bought some 36 and some 69 for summer.
  • DS was born bigger than average - I can't remember the percentile, but he was 8 lbs. 1 oz. No huge, just bigger than normal. He pretty much immediately dropped percentiles and was a skinny baby and now at almost 3, he's still just in the 15th-20th percentile. He was always at least 1 size behind (right now 2T pants are still big on him, he we will still  have to move to 3T with a belt because they will be too short otherwise).
  • Tino has always been sized way up. He was born in September, and went to 0-3 and was in 3-6 by 8 weeks. He's in 5t now

  • DS came out at something like 9 lbs 6 oz and long. He pretty much never fit into NB clothes after leaving the hospital, and was in 3-6 well before he hit 3 months.

He's 10 monhths now, and because he's not walking yet we're hitting this weird point where a lot of 12m pants don't fit right because they are made for slim walker legs, not chubby crawler thighs. But a lot of 9m pants are too small.

I think the choice between EBF and FF can also influence growth rates.

So to answer your question, for summer clothes I definitely would aim big. Complicating things, brands to vary in size, just like they do for women's clothing.

  • Thanks everyone. I guess I'll just buy a few essentials and keep the receipts. I just had a coupon and carters has a big sale so I thought I'd stock up.

  • DS1 was 8lb 6oz at birth, but is LITTLE now. He's only about 30lbs now. He was seriously only "big" for the first couple months.

DS2 was 8lb 11oz and is huge now! Lol. He, at nearly 7 months old, is the size DS1 was at a year old. He is in 12 month clothes and is about 20lb.

My DS is now 6 weeks old and wearing some 3-6 month items.  He was born 10 lbs 1 oz and at 1 month was 11lbs2ozs.  Buy stuff from Carter's using your coupon as they will always return or exchange, it doesn't matter how long has gone by.

  • My 2 month old now weighs like 14 lbs or sumshit. He's been in 3-6 month clothing for 2 weeks now. I fully expect him to be in 6-9 month clothes by 4 months. Then probably 12 month clothes by July. My kids always are born on the high average size (Rosie was 8 lbs, Cade was 8 lbs 3 oz) then grow rapidly.

  • DD was 9.9 pounds and 21.5 inches at birth (vaginal delivery, I am woman hear me scream in agony) She fit into newborn sizes for about three hours. She's pretty much evened out weight wise with other toddlers her age, but has continued being long.

  • DS was projected to be "almost" 10 pounds and he was 8lb 7 oz. He has been between the 75th and 95th percentile since he was born. Honestly though, I wouldn't buy too much stuff unless it's an amazing price or you can re-use/regift it. It's just so hard to predict. DS turned one on February 18, and he is wearing some 18 month and some 24 month clothes.

  • Dd4 is the same size as your ds OP. she was 10lb12 oz and has always trended high on the charts like her sisters. They all blew through sizes quickly. It's a combination of them being bigger to begin with and the fact were not terribly short, nor are our families. If it were me I wouldnt stock up on tons or buy ahead, but I might put cash away every pay to get clothes later.

Caramel, I miss pics of Tino! I remember you guys from the age boards, but I mostly lurked then.  S is tall, but he's got her licked.

  • DD was 9 lbs 2 oz, and always wore the size of however many months she was.  I think she wore a couple of newborn things for maybe the first week, then moved to 0-3.

She's 16 months, around 90th percentile for height and weight, and wears 18 month, 24 month, and 2T clothes, depending on the brand.
