Thoughts on borax?

I bought borax so I can make my own laundry detergent once my conventional is gone. I've been replacing all my cleaning products with vinegar, etc as I use up the store bought junk.

Anyway, I saw on the box that you can use borax to refresh carpets. Usually I just use baking soda, but I decided to try the borax. As I was vacuuming it up, I started second guessing myself. I have a 8 month old crawling everywhere, is that safe for him?

Re: Thoughts on borax?

  • I have lurked on this board quite a bit, hoping this topic would come up. I have been making our detergent for about a year using borax and washing soda. I do not use on the baby's clothes though because I have seen there is some controversy on the subject. I know you can use it as an insecticide which is another reason I worry.

  • I won't use it.  I used it once in a homemade carpet cleaning solution and DD broke out in the worst rash. Never again.

  • After posting, I did another google search. And it's not the best. I'll go back to the baking soda.

I didn't even think of my poor dog! But no one seemed to have any issues, thankfully.

  • I like borax fr some things like washing my own clothes and it cleans a bathtub really well. But I agree that it should be used anywhere that baby or pets could ingest so baking soda is probably best. Borax can also be used for ant killer or so I have read.
