Nursery Themes?

My SIL is hosting my baby shower and keeps asking if we have any theme. Since we aren't finding out the gender we are going neutral with greens and yellows (we already had an empty room in the house painted a light green). But we can't decide on if we should do a theme and if so what theme we would do. So, I was just wondering if anyone else is going with just doing colors or if you have a theme, what it is?

Re: Nursery Themes?

  • I'm finding out so I won't plan my theme until then, but I had a friend who was team green and they did an owl theme for their nursery. There are lots of great owl decor/products out there, and the nursery turned out really cute. It was also easy for them to make it more feminine once they had their baby girl.

  • We arn't finding out the gender either.  I am thinking of painting the room a Tiffany blue and then if its a girl I will get pink large circle decal stickers.  If its a boy we will do white ones.  I think woodland animals would be cute.  We live in the north in Canada so it fits.  Little bunnies, moose, bears.  Also, my husband is an rcmp officer so i think it could be cute.

    My other ideas:

    -Beatrix Potter

    -Cow jumped over the moon

    -Peter Pan

  • We didn't use a theme, i just got some colorful curtains and sheets and put some of her toys around the room and hung up a pretty growth chart we got at our shower. Even though we knew our first was a girl I bought all the basics in a choc brown color bc I wanted to be able to use them for subsequent kids. So if we have a boy this time I'll just buy more boy appropriate curtains and sheets and do same with a new growth chart and toys. Now DD's big girl room is another story, I went batcrap crazy in there bc it's her room from now on.

  • We are going a frog theme for a girl or boy. But birds and bird houses are cute for both genders.
  • We are definitely finding out what we are having, but we are doing a Disney theme. It can definitely be gender neutral, especially if you stick with Winnie the Pooh or Finding Nemo. We are steering clear of Disney princesses, but will add pinks or blues once we know the sex.

  • we're doing a gender neutral travel theme (globes, maps, travel posters, etc.) the thing I'm looking most forward to is our photo wall.

we're going to have friends and family send us photos of themselves in their favorite places, and write on the mats "aunt sarah and uncle mike in thailand" or whatever. so then the baby will have fun photos of his/her family hanging in the room.

  • We didn't really do a theme for DS's room.  He has nice blue walls and his bedding is baby snoopy, but we didn't go overboard with wall hangings and matching stuff all over the place.  For his new bedroom I'm doing a jungle theme, but it'll still just be the bedding, curtains and a few wall hangings.

  • We are going to find out the gender for sure, but we already have decided on doing a woodland animals theme. I am so excited about it!!! I think that is an adorable theme and totally gender neutral. There are also a lot of ideas on Pinterest for this theme.
We will do the walls a very soft grey and add a fluffy white carpet.
  • Because we have two wolf-hybrids and he's really into wolves, hubby wanted to do like wolf cubs. But I kinda thought that was restricting. So, I said what about cubs (wolf, bear, lion, etc), but then thought that might but us all over the place decor wise. And any time we talk about it, we can't really agree on anything.

  • Teddy bears are baby neutral.

  • I don't particularly care for themes. plus I think those themed sets that are sold at places like BRU are ridiculously overpriced and you can't use half of the stuff in them.

We are going for more of a color scheme with this baby.

  • This was the first question my sister had as well!

We were initially thinking Peter Pan for a boy or Alice in Wonderland for a girl but because my sister wants to paint the room with a mural (great artist but something that she's never done) she asked if I would be open to a Dr Seuss motif that would be for a boy or girl.

If she's painting it she can do whatever she wants lol!

  • I have been a Winnie-The-Pooh fan since I was little.  For as long as I had an allowance, I have been collecting Winnie-the-pooh things, so, i have totes full of stuff thats never even been open. DH and I are going to go through these things and pick out the best pieces for a nursery, and start weeding out my collection.  Hey, I'll be 30 very soon, I can't hold on to all of it forever. Or can I?

  • We are finding out the gender, however I want to keep it unisex anyways. I'm not a fan of pink. So we are probably going with what other moms have already posted, jungle, woodland animals or owls. I'm leaning towards woodland animals but not going overboard with stuff everywhere.
  • We found out with DD but did a gender neutral nursery because we wanted to use same decor/bedding for future babies.  We have this bedding: https://www.amazon.com/Lambs-Ivy-Habitat-PC-Beddi/dp/B00385MAP2.  We also used giraffe, elephant and monkey wall art pieces (from Babies R Us) and a tree wall cling with birds (from Kohls).  DD loves the animals on her wall.  My sister also wanted to coordinate the shower with the nursery so she did a safari animal shower.

  • DS's room was green & yellow and it had a jungle theme which turned into more of a monkey theme.

We'll be finding out what this baby is, but it won't have a themed room at all. Just decorated in purple/grey for a girl or aqua/grey for a boy.

  • We are finding out the gender, but we decided to do a baby Lion King theme. We are not planning on getting everything in Lion King, but we do like the bedding and a few wall hangings for it.

  • We are not finding out gender but are doing a puppy theme.  The colors will be very neutral and we can make it more girly or boyish once the baby arrives.  I saw a handmade puppy quilt on Esty that I loved so I am going to have my Mom make something similar and sheets and curtains will be solids.  Puppy pictures and nicknacks around the room.

P.S.  Ravenclaw1 I absolutely love your idea, please post a pic when it is done!

  • Jungle? Baby animals? Stripes? Polka dots?
  • With DS I wanted a fairly gender neutral theme since we wanted to use the same nursery with #2.  We went with a winnie the pooh & friends theme and painted the walls a light green color.

  • We've always just done a critter and and color. Ladybugs for dd1 , butterflies for dd2, purple for both. If this is a girl we'll add dragonflies to te mix, not sure if its a boy.

  • A good friend of mine isn't finding out, but she didn't want a gender neutral nursery. She got the basics down (furniture, paint) but she isn't buying the bedding until LO arrives.

  • We're planning to do a jungle theme regardless if it's a boy or girl. Currently the room is already purple, so once I find out the gender we'll know if we need to paint it or not. I've seen really cute jungle themes for both girls and boys so it would work well either way.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea!  That's actually almost exactly what we originally wanted to do, but I changed my mind when I decided I'm too lazy to really do much decorating.  :D  We just ended up doing colors.

This is what I did last time. I didn't even paint. I don't think many people do it this way though. But, I knew LO would be sleeping in the pnp in our room for the first 5 to 6 months anyway so it didn't matter to me if I had all the bedding and accessories up. And I totally agree about those matchy matchy sets being ridiculously over priced.

  • We will be doing a farm theme regardless of the gender. I will purchase gender neutral so I can use it with future children.

We own a farm, so if it is a girl or a boy they will be raised on the farm.

I love this idea so much too. I mentioned it to DH after the last time we discussed this on here, and I think we're going to do something similar... not sure exactly how it will look yet, but we're kind of basing it off of "Oh the places you'll go" by Dr. Seuss.

I like owl theme for gender neutral, the birds/nest theme and just saw on pinterest a really cute rubber ducky theme. Also have seen a lot of Alice in wonderland Mad Hatter tea party style themes for showers.

  • Our room is light gray. For a boy it will be superheroes, for a girl we will do black and white photos of different landmarks...Eiffel tower, Big Ben, etc...and light pink accents.

  • We are doing a Shel Silverstein nursery, whether it's boy or girl. We'll paint the walls a light grassy green, and all the accents will be black and white. Then we are going to have someone paint the giving tree on the wall, and I'm getting some Shel Silverstein quote decals too. I had mentioned a few themes I liked to DH, and he was so not into them, but when I suggested this, he jumped on it. So that's what we're doing. We will also frame some poems from Silverstein's books and hang those on the wall. Furniture will all be white.

  • I'm not into themes. We'll be doing a color scheme... grey white with accents of coral and maybe navy for a girl and accents of orange and navy for a boy.

  • wow!  I hadn't put any thought into a nursery theme before, but while reading through your posts it occurred to me that I could go with a fish, sea creature theme.  It harkens back to my marine research days and my obsession with crustaceans. Plus I practically grew up on the ocean. Just to get Dh on board....

    Thanks for the inspiration guys!
  • If we have a little boy it will be Dr. Seuss theme.
Girl it will be butterflies, trees, flowers.. more of a nature scene.

My aunt will be painting on the walls so I am excited :)
