Picky Eater/Rewards Chart

I decided to try out a sticker reward chart for DS to help him TRY new foods. I started last week with a chart I downloaded (25 stars on it). For every new food he tries (and swallows), he gets 1 star filled. If he finishes an entire meal (preschooler sized) he gets 2.  And if he feeds himself completely without asking us to feed him--as he has some self care delays--he also gets one sticker.

I told him at 10 stickers, he gets sometime small from the dollar store. And at 25 stickers he gets a toy.

So far so good. We're at 9 stickers. He's tried in the last week--salmon, a chicken nugget, a buttermilk biscuit and a meatball.

Progress!

He only gets rewarded for trying a lunch/dinner food or healthy snack. He wanted a reward for finishing a piece of chocolate. LOL  I hate that I'm doing rewards for eating, but he's refused to try foods since he was 18 months old and I want him to have a more balanced diet.

Hoping this will lead to easier dinner times eventually.

Re: Picky Eater/Rewards Chart

  • Whatever works! Has he found anything new that he wants to eat again?

Good idea, Robyn,  I'd like to try this for DD, as she will only eat the tops of broccoli for vegetables. Where did you get the chart, from what site? TIA!

  • FYI... I just bought a piece of bright colored posterboard for less than a $1 at Walmart.  Drew boxes on it and there's his chart.   Also found half-price puffy stickers at Michaels for a couple of bucks, too.   He got to pick them out.

  • I don't remember where I got the chart. I just Googled and a bunch came up.

So far, the one food that he's had more than once is a chicken nugget. Perhaps not the healthiest food, but it's a new one.

And last night he tried almonds and granola--and craisins.

  • We tried something similar with our oldest daughter.  I told her if she tried a new food every night for a full week she could go to Build-a-Bear and pick out a new outfit for her Hello Kitty.  That worked for exactly one week and then nothing since despite the offers of more outfits, a bed for the kitty, etc.  She's pretty stubborn so it's hard finding anything that makes it worth it to her to try new things.  I did get her to try a scalloped potato last night so I guess that's something!

I hope your chart keeps on working.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
