Baby Names

Boy Name from TV show

I am pregnant with my second child and don't know the sex yet.  We have had a girl name picked out for the last 4 years, but used our only boy name on our son - Leif Alexander (pronounced Layf, not Leaf). He has my husband's last name (I didn't change mine), and his name honors my husband's deceased father's love for great explorers.

This baby will have my last name and we would like his name to honor my family in some way. The thing is, we really hate most boy names and don't want something common. We previously had thought we would name our second son Sebastian and call him Bastian like in Never Ending Story, but after pondering that for a few years, I don't really like it anymore, and I've had three friends name their boys that over the last 2 years.

I'm really into the name "Castiel" - yes, the one from the angel in Supernatural.  But there are many additional good reasons for this name: 1) It means "Angel of Thursday", my father - whom was one of my best friends - passed away a few months ago on a Thursday - I was not pregnant at the time, but he knew what our girl name would be (which honors his father) and loved it. I thought this would be a nice way to honor him the way my first son's name does, as if he would be the angel looking over the son didn't get to meet; 2) I have several close friends named or nicknamed "Kaz", "Cas" or "Kas" - so around here, a name like "Cas" is not unusual; 3) I always loved the name Gabriel - the name of another archangel - and thought I would name a boy that. Until I married a Gabriel in my 20s, and later divorced him.  So I can't go naming my son after my ex-husband, but Castiel has the same sort of inspired divine feel to it.

So given this, what do you think? Would you still give me the stinkeye for naming my kid after a TV show character that is likely to not even be around in a decade or so, so no one will remember the link.  And before you go insulting me about being too immature to have a kid if I'm choosing a TV show character, I'm 34, and it's not about being a Supernatural fan. I just really like the name and think it has a beautiful sound and meaning.

Re: Boy Name from TV show

  • If you hadn't said it was a character from a TV show I wouldn't have known.

Castiel is NMSAA, but if you like it, use it.

  • I would not know it was Supernatural, as it isn't a show i watch! I think it sounds nice and i love all the meaning behind it, but  would not be sure i was pronouncing it correctly! my guess is Cas-tee-elle?

  • I've heard this name before, and someone who frequents this board has a DS with that name too. I never knew it was from Supernatural. And while I know that tv show is popular, it is only so with a particular demographic. I don't think many people who hear the name will know it's from that show.

    I think it's a fine name.

  • bsinno - yup, like any of the archangel names, it would be pronounced with an "EE elle" at the end (think of Gabriel, Ariel, Uriel).  We would use the nickname "Cas".  We are used to people mispronouncing our other son's name, so it doesn't phase us to politely correct people.

  • I would mock you, except that my DD's name is Tabitha, and it was 100% inspired by the baby on the show Bewitched. ;-)

  • I would automatically think of Supernatural (I am 33).

I actually like both Sam and Dean as names, but am probably not going to use them because I feel like people we know will mock us. (one guy in particular).  One of my friends (who doesn't watch) actually just named her son Sam, so that one is off the table anyway.

Castiel I don't like as much, but it has nothing to do with the show.  I have trouble picturing angel names, or more obscure Biblical names on real people.

I could definitely see somebody going by Cas, but I would be surprised when I found out the full name.   I'm sure I would get over it though, so if you really like it, that shouldn't deter you.  I would definitely not be judgy, more just... "huh, ok, that's different".  if that makes sense?

  • I love the meaning it would hold for you & I'm really liking the NN Cas.

  • I'm not a fan of the name, but I don't see anything wrong with getting a name from a TV show. We are thinking of Deacon as our boy name, which was inspired by Nashville.
