While I'm being a PW: Question about reducing bottles

So DS for quite some time has been taking 5 six-oz bottles a day.  Lately, however, he usually finishes just the morning and bedtime bottles, and the rest of the day drinks 4-5 oz.  So he's really only having anywhere from 24-27 oz.  And sometimes he doesn't finish the morning or bedtime ones either, but usually he takes at least 5 oz those times.  So my question is, at this point should I reduce the # of bottles or the number of oz per bottle.

Right now he gets a bottle at 7am (usually finishes), 10am, 1pm and 4pm (usually drinks 4-5 oz) and 7pm (usually finishes).  Should I start doing maybe a bottle at 7am, 11am, 3pm and 7pm and keep all bottles at 6 oz, or at this point, would you still give him a bottle every 3 hours, but maybe make each of the daytime bottles 4-5 oz bottles?

In terms of weaning him off bottles/formula I'm not sure if the idea is to start feeding him less often or start feeding him less quantity wise at each feeding or both.  TIA!

Re: While I'm being a PW: Question about reducing bottles

  • Our pedi said to do either. We're not quite there yet but ideally I plan to drop a bottle when the time comes. They currently take 4 8oz bottles per day, one every four hours. But if that doesn't work and they seem miserable I would continue the same schedule but offer less.

  • Thanks missa, good idea to try reducing number of bottles first, then oz if that doesn't work.  Maybe I'll do that too.

  • I am a little fuzzy on things from that long ago, but I remember us dropping bottles instead of reducing the amount. I really think it helped when it came down to really get rid of them.

  • Lil gets a 6oz bottle first thing in the morning, then she gets 4 oz of formula in her sippy cup with her lunch and dinner meal real food, then a 6 oz bottle at night before bed. If she wakes in the middle of the night I give her a 6 oz bottle. With her snacks she gets water in a sippy.
