Shaking eyes

Has anyone noticed their LO's eyes shaking very slightly back and forth.  The first time I saw this my thoughts wandered toward absence seizures.  But LO is perfectly awake, aware, and interactive while it is happening.  It stops when she's sleepy and seems to be worst when she's very excited and attracted by something?

Re: Shaking eyes

  • You may want to bring it up to your pedi. My son has shaky eyes as well, but his are most noticeable when is he tired or fussy. Our pedi noticed it an referred us to a pediatric ophthalmologist. It turns out he has congenital nystagmus an eye movement disorder characterized by shaking eyes caused by albinism of the eye. We go for some electric vision tests to see how well he can actually see next week. His vision seems normal to me, but nystagmus can cause some problems, so it's definitely something to have checked out!

This exactly.  WE took DD in when her eyes did that same thing.  nystagmus can be an indicator of something more serious.

  • I haven't noticed shaky eyes but I have noticed the left eye seems to wander and cross, when tired.  My pedi also noticed this and asked me to write down when I notice and we'll re evaluate at her 6 month appointment.  She was very cranky at the four month appointment last week so he didn't want to speculate.

  • Ds had periods of nystagmus ("shaking eyes") for a few months. It came on suddenly at about 5 months old and left just as suddenly a few months later. It would happen when he was very tired. We met with both an opthalmologist and neurologist just to make sure everything was ok.
