Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Not crawling at almost 10 months??

DD's doc says she is doing great! I filled out a 4 page inventory on what she's been up to, he played with her, had her on her belly, standing, etc. Still, I can't help but feel concerned because so many babies around her and before her in my life were crawling and getting around better than she is at this age. So, any other experiences with some late movers would make this momma feel a whole lot better!

Some details - she hates being on her belly, can scoot backwards, or in a circle.  She doesn't really get up onto her knees at all, ever, unless I do it for her.  She is a squirmer and I find her sideways in her crib, etc.  She rolls well from back to belly, but has only done belly to back a few times.  She stands independently while holding on and is sort of cruising a bit.  She doesnt take great steps (with support) but does take some.  She doesn't stand well unsupported (a few seconds at most).

She has great fine motor skills and has been feeding herself puffs, etc since about 6 to 7 months.  She holds her sippy, but not her bottle (she can, she just wants mommy to do it for her).

Re: Not crawling at almost 10 months??

  • Not all kids crawl, some actually skip this step and go straight to walking, which seems to be the path yours is taking. If your pedi isn't concerned and feels that she is hitting the correct stages at her age, I wouldn't worry.

  • As an early intervention physical therapist, I can tell you that crawling is critical. It's ok to do it a bit later but bottom scooting or going straight to walking is not appropriate. The babies who do this lack core strength and have gross motor difficulties later.

What is later?  She shows some signs, but never actually crawls.

  • DD finally crawled the day before she turned ten months. She used to push around backwards, showed no interest in crawling for about a month after figuring that part out, then all of a sudden last week started trying to figure out crawling. Took about five days from starting to get up on all fours again to crawling well.

  • My DS is 9 months and doesn't crawl yet.  Pediatrician says he is doing great!  He also is pulling himself up and standing though.  My mom said I barely crawled and went straight to walking and I don't have any issues.  I don't agree with that statement that not crawling is going to cause any problems.  Obviously if they can pull themselves up to sitting and standing they must have good core strength.
  • Just also wanted to add that I graduated with high honors, went to college and have a very good job.  I mean if the baby wants to walk instead of crawl, I'm not sure how you force them to crawl instead.  Some of these comments like your child will have learning disabilities and problems with motor skills are NOT helpful.  Why would you write such a comment to a mother?  All babies are different and not crawling doesn't mean anything.  SHeesh people relax!

  • My DS is 10 1/2 months and he just started crawling on Wednesday.  I know it's easy to be worried but it will happen.  Just keep them on their tummies and they will get there.

  • He also didn't start rolling until a month ago.  It seemed to happen all at once for him.

  • Dont WORRY! My ds at 11 months wasn't pulling himself up into a sitting position! He JUST started that 2 weeks ago. AND JUST on WED started to crawl on his knees!!  So please do worry. They all get there. My dd NEVER learned to crawl. Oh and DS hates to hold a bottle and self feed-not even a sippy cup.

  • DD started to crawl at 10.5 months. It took her a whole month to figure it out. Now she's a little over 11 months and is pulling up on things. My DD is the same as yours..very good fine motor skills, so maybe that's why it took her a little to get going on the gross motor skills. Who knows..don't worry about it. Enjoy your baby not being mobile. I used to worry about it and wanted her to crawl right away but then decided to be happy with being able to put her in one spot and not have to worry about her getting into things or hurting herself. Now is a different story with her all over the place.

  •  my heavy 10  month old is not  crawling yet,  but the pedi  wasn't  concerned.    did you crawl our go straight to walking?    she said one in 10  babies skip crawling and it's often passed down from a parent.

hi!  the physical therapist my dd sees isn't worried about her not crawling yet (she's 10 months, adjusted)...and assures me that crawling isn't necessary.  however, if she doesn't end up crawling and goes straight to walking, to make sure she does a lot of climbing b/c that will work the core muscles that crawling does too.

  • My MIL went straight to walking and never crawled.  I, however, crawled early and I was walking regularly by 10 months according to my mom.

She is a very good sitter, reaches forward very well and sits herself back up, reaches behind herself, etc.  She pulls up to standing with some assistance, but cannot get to sitting from a laying down position.

She is starting to lunge forward and onto her knees, but then seats herself again and won't crawl.  When she is on her belly, I have to put her on her hands and knees, and when I release, her legs flop out and she goes right onto her belly into a prone push up.

First time mom nervous nelly for sure, and I already have anxiety.  I understand that one day she'll just do it, but the way she is going, I just don't see that and it is difficult to trust in it.

Our doctor strongly disagreed with this thought.  He stated that all babies exhibit their own skills at their own rates.  When babies were put to bed on their belly, they would usually push up and crawl first.  But putting them to bed on their backs changed that.

Both of my children are 9 months old, and they are not crawling.  I asked the doctor this exact thing, and he said that this is absolutely ok.  Walking, crawling, sitting up, all happen on their own timetable.

To state that because a child does not crawl means they will have gross motor difficulties later is an absolutely misinformation, I have to strongly disagree with this.  Babies simply develop at their own time.  In a board like this where people post "fact" please take everything you read with a grain of salt and if you are really worried call your doctor back and schedule another appointment.  Taking someones word for your child not crawling and having gross motor difficulties later (who has never seen your child) is absolutely crazy to me!!!!

I had some anxiety in this as well, but what is really interesting for us is that we have twins.  They are not exhibiting anything at the same time as each other, yet we do and give them the exact same for everything.  If one gets solids, so does the other.  If we practice walking with one, so does the other.  But they are in two different places despite how we "parent".  While one is eating more solids, the other is more vocal and physical in her hand motions.  While one is more into large objects and bouncers, the other is more into her learning saucer and small toys.  Neither are crawling yet.  They are in exactly the same place as your little ones.

I read your statement about "legs flop out" and ours do the exact same thing.  They look like frog legs in the back, and they just can't hold a pushing up position.  Please don't worry, it all comes in time.  When we see the other 6 children in our daycare class, we see how quick they go from sitting to walking, or crawling to walking, etc.  It happens in a matter of a few days, and some do it at 6/7 months, others don't walk until 15 months.  It's all on their own timetable!

  • I'm a FTM too, and I think it's normal to worry like this. One of my co-workers has a baby a few days younger than mine, and his baby has done pretty much everything first. It's hard not to compare and be concerned.

You could always see another pedi if you want a second opinion. You might find that more reassuring than TB message boards. :)

But FWIW, my LO is crawling and cruising like mad, but still doesn't quite have his pincer grip down. He also is still on purees only and was slow to get into solids. I think it makes sense that some babies will develop fine motor skills sooner and gross motor skills later, and vice versa.

Maybe try getting down on the floor with her for tummy time and engage her attention with a favorite toy or something? Slowly extend tummy time and see if that helps.

  • My DS2 did not crawl until after he turned 10 months.  He was scootching backwards and in circles, and standing on furniture (but you had to be right there incase he fell), and walking with help, but did not seem to want to crawl.  Then in the matter of a week he was crawling all over the place, pulling himself up on anything and everything and walking around the furniture.  I never have had any concern that he is behind.

Not all babies crawl and I do not agree with the poster that says they will have problems.  My niece never rolled over and she is just fine... All kids are different!
