Nighttime waking

The last week or so, my 2 year old has been waking up a lot at night. It's completely ridiculous for him to be up more often than my 1 month old. We have a baby gate in front of his door, so sometimes he'll cry and bang on the gate for a couple minutes then go back to sleep. Other times he is loud enough that I go in and lay on the floor next to him because I'm afraid that he will wake DD up.

Last night he woke up as I was putting DD back down. I changed his diaper and held and rocked him for a bit. When I took him back to his room, he said that he didn't like his big boy bed, so I put his pillow and blanket on the floor, tucked him in and he went right to sleep.

I know he needs consistency, but that is so hard when I am also trying to care for a newborn at the same time. Any suggestions? Advice? Words of encouragement?

Re: Nighttime waking

  • My little guy has been waking up since transitioning into a bed too.  He comes into our room and gets into bed with up around midnight every night.  I was totally against this and spent a few months forcing consistency.  It didn't stop the wake ups....it just kept up both up for hours at night.  I gave in.  However, I still notice when he is in my bed, he is still waking a lot.  He wakes and sits straight up and screams out!?  I don't know if the age is prone to bad dreams, fear of the dark, or maybe its teething.  I am hoping it is a phase that passes.  Soon!

  • Does he have his 2 year molars yet?  We are dealing with this right now because of her molars.  Last night it was a lovely 4 AM wake-up.  She's also been waking up at 7:30 instead of her usual 9 lately.

Poor baby is so tired during the day and her molars aren't even close to coming out yet Tongue Tied
