DD potty training tips

Hi everyone!

DD is 2 and a half.  She'll use the potty no problem at daycare, but at home and on the weekends, she absolutely refuses and throws big tantrums when we ask her to sit on the toilet.  We have the same toilet seat as daycare and a small potty that she used to have no problems using.

Any tips?

Re: DD potty training tips

  • Try going the same time.  Most daycares will have a potty break where they all go in at the same time.  I know it's not the most wonderful thing to do to pee with your child, but it's worth a shot.

  • Like PP, pee with them. I go and my DD high fives me and does a "congrats dance", then she goes. Also, bribery works great, when DD refuses to try and pee, we offer fruit snacks or chocolate milk and I swear I have never seen her run so fast to go try. Be dramatic when she does it, overly excited, and reward her when she does. It makes it more fun, and then one day you'll notice her going without even telling you. All this week I haven't had to ask my DD once, I just happen to find her in the bathroom peeing.

  • Ha I could have written this exact same thing. We were chugging along she was doing ok at home, but not great, but would go the entire day at daycare dry. Then she started fighting us tooth and nail. Anytime we suggested the potty - "NO potty right now, I'm fine" and would literally hold on to her pants for dear life. I didn't want to push her so we went about two weeks with her doing great at daycare and fighting us at home and going in a pullup.

My DCP finally said - you know she is playing you right? she can do this and you just need to make her. So, I waited until I knew she had to go, wrestled her pants down and told her she at least had to sit on the potty, now she isn't giving us problems anymore. Another thing I did learn is that she can hold it much longer now then she could when we first started, so is she says she doesn't have to go (for us), she probably doesn't have to. It's only been a little less than a week, but so far so good and no accidents except poop - which is a whole different ball game. GL

  • The only thing that worked for DS was to tell him no more diapers and leave him without underwear or pants for a weekend...,by Sunday night he was fully trained. Before that he would play games and scream on the potty.
