12 month old biting

so my lil girl just turned a year old and has about 11 teeth and shes started to bite me and pretty much only me. this morning she was hugging me and snuggling when all of the sudden she just bit me in the shoulder and left marks. anyone have this problem? not sure what to do about this.

Re: 12 month old biting

  • Try loudly saying "ouch, don't bite" and put her down. It worked for us, sometimes you just have to redirect or withhold attention for a moment.

  • My son does this when he is teething. We do what the previous poster suggested but I also give him some crushed ice (only very tiny pieces so he doesn't choke or chip a tooth) it seems to help soothe him. I've also used wet frozen wash cloths and that worked for a while too.
  • My DS has been doing this for about 6 months now.  I tell him to stop, but he still does it when he hugs me and laughs.  My niece did it to SIL as well.  I think it's a phase & hopefully once they are old enough to reason-they will stop it. Honestly, I think it's some kinda affection thing-I don't think he understands that it hurts.

  • As PP mentioned, saying firmly "Ouch. No biting" and put her down. I had to walk away from her for a few minutes because I was so frustrated and that seemed to have done the trick for us. Their worst fear is no attention most of the time.

  • When my LO started doing this to me, I said loudly, "ow! No biting!" and put her down and "ignored" her for 30 seconds - 1 minute. After that time ended, I joined her again. The first time I did it, she looked shocked, probably because I don't raise my voice at her. The second time she did it, she sat down with her arms up until I joined her again. She hasn't bit me since.
