Deciding on pronunciation

We initially were leaning towards the name/ spelling Amelia, but decided to use the Greek spelling, Emmelia, due to DH being Greek.  Now that we have decided on that name and spelling, we are second guessing whether we should use the English pronunciation (just like Amelia) or use the Greek pronunciation (sounds like Emma Lia). Any opinions?

Emmelia pronounced as "Amelia" or as "Emma Lia"?

When it's spelled Emmelia, my brain immediately says it with the greek pronounciation. So my vote is for that. When I see that, I don't think "Amelia."

If I saw this name on paper, I would pronounce it Emma Lia like Emmeline is Emma Line. But I would question if it was EM MEEL ya.

  • Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback.  I had been wondering if there could be difficulties when people saw the name in writing.
  • I think if you use the Greek spelling and were to use the American pronunciation, it might look like you didn't do your research, which you clearly did!  Also, since your DH is Greek, wouldn't his fam notice that you were pronouncing it "wrong?"

I have a cousin named Gianna, and her parents (who are both of 100% Italian ancestry, BTW) pron it GEE-ah-NAH.  My extended family (also 100% Italian heritage) give her such grief about it.  So that would be a concern for me if I were you.

Basically, another vote for Greek pronunciation.

  • I guess I don't know the Greek pronunciation bc I would say Amelia as [ah meal ya] and emmelia as [ee meal ya] Good luck, pretty name either way.
