Dads & Dads-to-be

Scheduled a date!

Short Version: Our little Jackson should be here Monday! He's been big since the very beginning (smallest was 63%, but usually hung out in the 90's) Went today for our last growth ultra sound, they decided since he's still big, but not scary big (8lb 8oz according to the u/s) My wife's scheduled to be induced at 6 am, the 11th (original due date was the 14th) Then the Dr. should be in around 8 to break the water, then it's a waiting game.

Long Version: 36 weeks, 2cm/50%. We found she has gestational diabetes, and that she was putting on weight a little quicker than the Dr. liked. She also had a growth u/s. He was 8lb 7oz, they were fairly confident that it would be a c-section, and told us to expect to go that route, but they wanted to wait longer, to make sure he's developed, and they don't schedule c-sections until the u/s shows 9 pounds.

37 weeks, 2cm/75%. Told c-section was still most likely the plan, and would schedule a final u/s. Were also told that the GD can lead to "linebacker shoulders" and could be risky to go natural

38 weeks, 2cm/75%. Different u/s tech and machine, he was only 8lb 8oz, so 1 oz of weight according to that. Pretty sure the femur was the same too. The wife's weight didn't change from last week. However, only a couple of shirts still cover her. 2 weeks ago, they almost all did. No mentioning of broad shoulders; and of course, we forgot to ask about that while we were there. Rather than the c-section that kept being the plan, they decided inducing was the way to go. The reasoning was that his growth "evened out" although the wife is showing a lot more.

So, come Monday morning, 39W 4D, it will be time. I believe she said they were going to use Pitocin. Anything to be concerned about? My wife's friend said that's what they gave her, and it caused her baby to go into distress, so they had to do an emergency c-section.

Thanx for reading any of it, and big thanx if you read the long version.

Hope everything goes well!  I don't have any experience with inductions (or birth for that matter), but I'm sure ladyjenna will be along soon to warn you that it isn't all roses and sunshine.

  • Just be ready for anything to happen in that situation.  It is very stressful for both mom and baby, depending on how long it takes.  It sucked for my wife because she was not dilated by the time we got to the hospital to start.  That is probably why it took two days to get to the real labor.  But once those meds (Pitocin) started working, they really started working.  I hope they don't administer it they way the did to my wife, through the vjayjay...very painful.

It was very stressful for both, and at one point they were warning us that we may be looking at a c-section. That was the magic moment, and labor really took off from there.  Our boy was working so hard to get in position that at one point they put my wife on oxygen to make sure he was getting enough in his lungs and blood.

Just be ready for a rollercoster ride through this.  Throw me any questions you have, and good luck.

    Peace!

  • Thanks, I'm soo excited. I even have a countdown on the wallpaper of my phone. I don't know if it's good or bad though, lol. Sometimes I see it and think "YAY!" Other times I see it and think "What did I do, I'm not ready for this"
  • Nothing to be concerned about.. unless the doctors are trying to push the pregnancy when she is not ready.

My wife gave birth to a 10lb baby naturally at home, with a semi long labor 12 hours. He was 2 weeks late too.

Personally, I have a thing against doctors when it comes to this... No reason for the pitocin, no reason for a c-section, if your baby hovers around 8-9 lbs that is the bigger side of average.

Unless you wife is a high risk mother, dont let the doctors try to sell you on anything. Babies shouldnt be scheduled, unless absolutely necessary. If their only reason is that the baby is 8 and half lbs.. that is not any reason. From what I am told, Pitocin makes contractions worse. So my advice is to only do it when absolutely necessary.

Naturally, many others here will disagree with me.. But Good Luck and may the force be with you. lol

Once you see your kid, nature will take over and it will be like you have always been a father.

    Primal stuff!

This entirely.... Once you see your kid for the first time, Nature takes over you and you will know exactly what to do...

One last thing - Just make sure you and your wife are the first to touch him... your baby needs your germs and dont cut the cord early, you do that and you shut off 30% of the babies blood supply. Wait for the cord to stop pulsing, that is when the baby is truly an individual....
