what the heck could this be?

So DS (19 mos)has been at the pedi 3 times in the past two weeks. The first was to get his booster for his flu shot. Then a few days later he got a runny nose, then the next day it was a cough, then the next he broke out in a whole body rash, the next it was a fever of 102. So I took him to a pedi in the same office bc his normal pedi wasn't there. This pedi is really relaxed old school doc who doesn't seem to think anything is a big deal. I told him the story and he didn't seem concerned. And he said the rash was dry skin. I dont agree but hes been a pedi for 40yrs, I havent. So I said ok and took him home. The fever went away and he was fine. During this time his feet have skin peeling and cracking. I thought it was because his feet turn inward and he walks with his ankles turned in so i figured it was a little bit of rug burn. Out of nowhere again two days ago he was running a fever of 102.4 and yesterday i took him in to his regular doc bc the fever would go down with motrin but come right back again. She said she figured it was a touch of a virus and just make sure hes drinking and all that. She looked at his feet and said she thought it was athletes foot. Which Ive never seen so I had no idea. She told me to put lotion and socks on him and if that doesnt clear it up then we'd try lotrimin. So today the fever is gone again and he seems fine. But i noticed the little patches of skin peeling away are on his hands now. And his palms are bruised looking. They are purpleish and splotchy like he fell and caught himself but as far as I know he hasnt fallen. A few of his fingertips look like this too. Do you think any of this is related or are we just having groups of different issues here?

  • Ok, so when my brother was little his skin on his feet and hands would start peeling when he had strep throat.  It was the only time it ever happened, but EVERY time he started peeling it was strep.  I'm not sure if that's a "normal" symptom or not, but it might be worth looking in to.

If this is the same disease as "hand and foot" than that's what it sounds like. My Lo had it last year w/out the rash and peeling but often I would hear these are symptoms of that. Good luck!

  • throwing this out there could it be hand, foot, and mouth?

    sorry no clicky.

this describes a rash with blisters sometimes that occur on the feet, palms, and a fever. have
you noticed sores in the mouth?

I assume though your pedi would diagnose HFM pretty quickly. I don't know much about it only from friends and family who've dealt with it so this is a total guess.

regardlesd, I hope your LO is ok.

  • althetes foot is a fungus.  if he's barefoot the vast majority of the time, it makes no sense that he would develop it.  it requires a dark, moist environment to grow, which is NOT an environment you get when you're barefoot.  in fact, going barefoot can help treat althetes foot.

  • I would think Hand Foot and Mouth. Call the pedi and have them reevaluate.

  • Roseola or hand foot mouth disease. Both very common.
