What was he thinking?

We have been having sleep issues with DS over the last couple of weeks with all of the things going on. Last night I decided enough was enough and DS needs to go to sleep in his own crib again.

I put him in his crib, turned on the sound machine, closed the door and then I laid on the futon in his room waiting for him to stop crying and go to sleep. DH then snuck into the room and laid on the floor. We just waited quietly for DS to finally conk out. He cried, he played, he laid down, he stood up but he didn't go to sleep. Suddenly we heard him stand up again and I could tell he was looking at DH and I. DS then starts saying "Uh-Oh, Uhh-Ohh, Uhhhhh-Ohhhhh, Uhhh-Ohhh...." for about a minute.

He finally fell asleep about 1 hr after I put him down but DH and I then spent the next 30 mins wondering why DS kept saying Uh-Oh over and over. Did he think we died? Did he think he was really in trouble now since both of us were in his room?

Re: What was he thinking?

  • DD uses Uh Oh as an attention getter. She knows that Uh Oh means mom and dad will help her out. So sometimes, she says it even if she doesn't need help.

Maybe he wanted you to play with him, pick him up or acknowledge him in another way, since he knew you were right there.

  • It was probably like uh oh you all fell asleep and left me here awake lol. Have you tried leaving the room instead of laying there? He probably can't figure out why you're in his room but ignoring him.

All of this. My DH says "uh-oh" when I'm pretending to sleep to tease them. He probably just couldn't understand why you were asleep and ignoring him.

  • He might have just been saying it to say it.  Sometimes baby's repeat a sound that they like because it's funny to them or feels interesting to say.

  • I think what everyone said is completely possible! He probably was wondering why we were in his room and ignoring him.

I decided to stay in his room last night because previous nights when I put him to bed he would start crying and keep crying until someone finally came in. One night he cried so hard he projectile puked. I figured I could stay in his room a couple of nights until he got used to sleeping in his crib regularly like he is supposed to then I would transition to just putting him down and walking away. Up until very recently I could put him in his crib, tell him goodnight and he would be asleep inside of 20 minutes with no fuss. In the last couple of weeks with his dad being gone some nights, Grandma coming and watching him for the weekend, teething and illnesses he has been terrible at going to sleep or staying asleep. Oftentimes we were so tired that we would eventually bring him into our room; especially over this last weekend when he was running a fever. We are now trying to get back to "normal".

If anyone has any more suggestions about dealing with this situation I would love to hear them. Sorry this response is long.

  • Unless you think he's in pain or doesn't feel good you could try letting him CIO without you in the room. It may be more confusing that you're in the room but not responding so he's trying harder vs letting himself fall asleep.
  • No ideas why he did it but I got a good laugh!
