Toe Walking?

My 15-month old started walking 6 weeks ago and had been walking "normally" (i.e., on his entire foot) until 2 days ago when, all of a sudden, he started toe-walking about 50% of the time.  Anyone else experience this or something like it?  Many thanks in advance.

Re: Toe Walking?

  • My son toe walks a lot as well, and toe-dances and runs too. I think is has to do with boredom for him, when he is in an unfamiliar place or on uneven ground he walks normally, when he is excited or bored he toe-walks.

  • My son has been walking for almost 6 months and just started walking on his toes this past weekend.  He did it a lot on Saturday and Sunday, but it seems to be getting less frequent now...I guess he's just experimenting?

  • My DD does this too. She runs like that which according to my brother makes her run faster....I can attest to that lol

  • DD started walking around 11 months and just started occasionally walking on her toes within the past week or so. I think it's just something new that she just discovered she can do. Like PP said if you're concerned talk to your pedi about it at his next appt but it's probably no big deal.

  • At our son's 2 year check up, our pediatrician said that he needed to be referred to an ortheopedic/sports medicine physician for exercises for his achilles tendon & calf if he continues to do this more than 50% of the time by the time of his next checkup.  I guess this much toe walking can cause a shortening of the achilles tendon.  I am monitoring this now and per my pediatrician's suggestion, have him in 'high top' sneakers at home during the day as this significantly reduces their ability to toe walk.
