Cloth Diapering

Bag Balm?

I'm so sorry if this has been asked before - I haven't lurked on this board in quite a while.  I posted here a few times and lurked constantly when I was pregnant and planning to CD, but now that my LO is here, I have been lucky to not have any problems with CDing and haven't needed to come get help from you ladies!

DD has not had a BM in her sleep in a very long time, but last night she did and it didn't wake her up, so she didn't wake us up to change her.  When she woke up to eat, she didn't act any different, so I nursed her and went to change her diaper like normal and there was a BM in there that had obviously been there for a while (she slept for 5 hours after her last feeding/diaper change).  After I wiped, I saw that her bottom was very red and inflamed, so I put some diaper cream on it (I had California Baby), and DD screamed bloody murder :(  I ended up having to wipe it all off and leave her naked for a while to calm her down.  I called her Pedi this AM, and she said its likely some sort of chafing and being so raw, something in the California Baby cream probably stings her.  She recommended using Bag Balm, and a quick Google search gives me lots of different opinions on if it is CD safe or not.  So, I thought I'd come here and ask.  I just put Bag Balm on her and it seems to soothe her, but I put her in a disposable until I find out about the CD.

If Bag Balm is not safe, can you suggest something else that would be, and that she wouldn't react to like she did the California Baby?  She also screamed with her wipe solution (I make my own with water, witch hazel, and tea tree oil), so I switched to just water for the cloth wipes.

Also, I know I can use liners if it's not safe, and I have some scrap fleece, but I'm wondering what size to cut for the liners.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Re: Bag Balm?

  • I've heard of California Baby causing this issue before.

You could try Grovia Magic Stick, Grandma El's, CJ's Butter, or Earth BAby Mama.

Or you could also try Coconut oil. It all depends on the resources near you, since you'll want something you can purchase quickly.

For the liners, I would just measure your diapers and cut that size.

  • If the redness was caused by a poop, I would swear by Grandma El's. DS also had issues when I put CB on his rash.

I started with things that I could purchase locally, but nothing worked until I finally got some Grandma El's.
