Parenting after a Loss

Crawling

Is there anything that can be done to help LO learn how to crawl?  DS loves tummy time and wants so badly to move.  He will kick his legs constantly and reaches out like he's trying to pull himself forward but he goes no where.  He screams and gets so angry and I don't know how to help him figure it out.  He loves to jump in his bouncer and for you to hold him up so he can take "steps".  Sometimes I feel like he's going to walk before he figures out crawling.

I completely agree with that statement!  DS is the opposite, though, in the sense that he absolutely HATES being on his belly.. so, he's never going to figure out crawling because he's rarely ever on his tummy!  But, he is constantly jumping.. and lovessss it if I stand him on my feet and then we "walk" together.. he laughs so much!!  Curious to see others' suggestions!

  • Not really. Crawling isn't an actual milestone so it's generally fine to skip crawling all together. Just do lots and lots of tummy time. Our boys are obsessed with our cellphone so J actually started worming when we put a cellphone a foot in front of him.

  • The only things I can think of is doing tummy time w/ a boppy or something so he can get his arms underneath him to learn how to push up and enticing him w/ toys and such. DS was the same way w/ loving to "walk" but he got the crawling thing ages ago and just now is learning to walk. They all do everything in their own time, some things take longer than others. Mine can't go 10 steps across the room w/out taking a tumble... BUT he can scale his toybox and climb up onto the windowsill. :(

  • It helped to put a toy just out of DDs reach to get her to kind of stretch/lunge for it.

  • DD didn't crawl until after 12m, but she was walking by 8.5m.  I couldn't get her to crawl for the life of me.  I tried all the tricks.

  • I tried everything to help my ds crawl. He sounded how you mentioned, wanted to, got his feet kicking but just couldn't do it and would be so pissed about it.  He was a late crawler. Started army crawling around 8 1/2 months and only crawled on his hands and knees a couple times before taking his first steps at 11 1/2 months. It used to stress me out which is silly. They're unique and do things in their own way on their own schedule ;)

  • I started putting toys in front of him to entice him and then putting my hands on his legs so that when he would push he would actually move somewhere. Now he is crawling army-style all over the place.

But like PP's have said- they'll do it in their own time!

Why are you so anxious for a mobile baby? Crawling isn't common at 6 months and honestly...it's easier before the baby crawls.

It's not that I'm necessarily anxious for a mobile baby but you can tell that he wants to move so badly and he gets really angry and frustrated when he can't.  I just wanna do whatever I can to help him figure it out.

  • Dd was terrified of trying to crawl.  She started too at 9 months, mad was walking 2 weeks later.  She was really content with rolling to wear she wanted to go.

i think having him propped up a bit with the hoppy, like pp said, will encourage it possibly.

  • I'm not help. I'm neither helping nor hindering him when it comes to crawling. I enjoy being able to turn my head for 5 seconds knowing he will be in the same general location.

  • All you can really do is keep on with the tummy time and put toys out of reach to encourage wiggling to get it.

Honestly though, 6 months is early for crawling.  My kid was on the later side of normal at a week shy of 10 months...and you'd never know it now...he was vertical within a week and walking at 12.5 mos.  Some kids never crawl at all.

Enjoy these immobile times while you can.  Once they get moving it's a whole new ball game.
