We're planning a long plane ride with LO. How do you change a diaper on the plane? What about a poopy diaper? LO is very squirmy when we're in his own room at home. I shudder to think what will happen on a plane.
It's not great! Ask the flight attendants which bathroom has a changing table - most planes have one, but not in every restroom. If it does have a table, it's about half the size of a regular one, so you'll have to be creative with your space. But, I've done it several times, and my LO is pretty darn squirmy.
I also have a squirmy DD when it comes to diaper changes, but we have changed diapers in some pretty precarious circumstances a few times now, and when she knows that she's balanced on something weird out of necessity (like on top of a toilet with the lid closed), she doesn't move an inch. Here's hoping that your LO is the same way! Good luck!
I have a small pouch that i keep diapers, wipes, disposable changing pad, and tampons in. It is great for traveling or everyday trips to a bathroom in public. If you need a change of clothes you can just bring your LO out of the bathroom in a diaper and put new clothes on in your seat. There was a changing table in one of the bathrooms and it folded down from the wall and gave no room whatsoever in the bathroom but i managed. I also dressed LO in a onesie and took of her pants and shoes before we went into the bathroom.
Honestly I put LO in an overnight diaper before we boarded and the only reason why I changed her on the plane was because she pooped. I planned on her sleep most of the plane ride.
I changed ds on the changing table in the bathroom. The small space helped a lite because he could only squirm a little bit. Unfortunately the bathroom had tissues and paper towels in arms reach of the changing table. So we ended up with tissues everywhere including in ds mouth.
Just change as fast as you can and put your feet spread out to keep yourself balanced.
Good luck!
Ditto what PPs have said: Ask the flight attendant which (if any) bathroom has the changing table and prepare for it to be SMALL. Take as little as possible into the bathroom.
Dress your LO in something that is as easy as possible to change in. Last time for our early morning flight we kept DD in her one piece zip up pjs. Not easy to change in! Much easier to have her in pants and a shirt that's not a onesie.
I won't lie - changing a diaper on the plane was not easy! Every time I hear a story of someone changing a REALLY poopy diaper on the plane, I give that person mad props!
DH has mastered the skill of changing while LO is standing up. It saves us all those times when a changing table isn't available. On all the flights we've gone on there has been at least one table in the bathroom. If not and it's just a pee diaper I would lay a sheet on the airplane seat and change there. With my back to the aisle to spare people the peep show, of course.
The bathroom...it's not roomy or comfortable, but it's doable. I recommend bringing some clorox/lysol wipes. You can throw the dirty diaper in the trash in there. I would keep a small bag for on the plane, with things easily accessible. Just because when you get in that tiny restroom and put down the changing station, there isn't a lot of room for a big diaper bag. (Plus I got heebies thinking babout putting the bag down in there. So ended up holding it while also trying to balance a child on a changing table and changing his diaper.)
I also recommend changing him in the terminal restroom before boarding.
after several international flights, I have mastered the skill of changing LO by having him stand on the toilet seat cover. it's not easy, but it's do-able...even if it is a dirty diaper. make sure LO is in clothes that are easy to get in/out of, and only take what you NEED to use, diaper, wipes, and cream.
