We just found out we are having a boy and have started to throw around names so far Maverick is the only one we both like. So opinions? Anything negative we haven't thought about?
Middle name would be Eugene and DD is Eliana Marie.

Only if you've ever met anyone who has seen Top Gun.
NMS. Maybe it would work as a middle name, though, if it has special meaning to you.
I don't like it. I think it is one of the dreaded "trying too hard to be cool" names. It seems so overly macho and brash that it seems to be compensating for some perceived threat to masculinity, like the name equivalent of a red sports car.
Plenty of people like it, though ? it recently broke into the top 500 and is still gaining.
When DH and I throw around names, I try to think of a professional adult with the name we are discussing. Maverick is such a "big" name... as in big ego. I just can't imagine interacting on a professional level with someone named Maverick.

All of this. Sorry OP.

Speaking of which, I just found out that DH, whom I've known more than a decade, has never seen Top Gun. Who is this person I married?
Anyway, I agree, this sounds like a trying-too-hard kind of name and it would be a pain in the neck to carry professionally. Nickname or middle name, fine. Legal first name, no.

Wow I wouldn't have expected the amount of dislike... I know a Maverick who is an adult and the name has never bothered me! It is def not an awful name at all and not super popular either! I like it! Good luck!

ITA with all of this. Also, it reminds me of Sarah Palin, which is NOT a good association for me.

we have received only positive feedback from people when we tell them his name. We love it. Totally suits him too, We weren't trying to be cool and well were definitely not a-holes (really?!) as another posted stated. To each their own.
I have a friend who named her baby Marek. I think that a great name too.
Good luck with deciding!

Pre-Sarah Palin I thought of Top Gun.
Post-Sarah Palin, I hear her saying John McCain is a maverick over and over again. And Tina Fey saying "Maverick-y maverickness" in character.
and Top Gun.
I don't like it as a name.
this.

Agreed.
I love it!
I know it gets a good bit of hate on this board but I really do like it.

This. It's just an awful "name." I put that in quotes for a reason.
I think it is a name that people either really like or don't.
I came back to say if I didn't think it was a good name I wouldn't have given it to one of my children *points to siggy*
Ditto. It's a definitely a GP name of mine.
OP our sons name is Maverick.
