Kicking during diaper changes

I'm just curious if anyone has any suggestions.  My super sweet DS has started kicking and sometimes kicking me when I change his diaper.  I always give him something to occupy him, sometimes this works but not always.  I try saying no very firmly but it's almost like it makes him do it more.  Should I just ignore it?  Should I try time-outs? DS is 19 months and we really don't have any other behavioral problems - he doesn't really kick or anything unless I'm changing his diaper.

Re: Kicking during diaper changes

  • Our 22 month old has been doing the same thing for the last couple months - which gets aggravating for her dad and I for different reasons!  Mostly we try to step to the side instead of being right in front of her.  A while ago we set up a small sticky mirror on the wall right at her face level when she's lying down so we'll direct her attention to the mirror, try engaging her in singing a song, play the knocking game on the wall - "knock knock, who's there?".  If it continues we'll firmly push her feet down and say "no kicking" then go back to one of the distractions. We're able to reduce the kicks through some combination of these four methods.  ...and changing really, really fast!

  • DD does this sometimes.  I just stand there and refuse to look at her.  I just wait until she stops and then try again.  She usually stops when I stop papying attention but starts up again once or twice when I try again.  I just keep stopping and starting until she finally realizes that I'm not going to fight with her and lets me do it.

I stop and let her get the wiggles out.nbsp; Sometimes I can run my fingers from her waist up to her neck and she'll scrunch the top half of her body just long enough for me to secure her diaper.

Oh I wouldn't call these kicks wiggles, haha!

  • DD trys to squirm and do the alligator death roll sometimes while getting changed. I try and give her something to occupy herself and most of the time it works. If it doesn't, I pick up something else like a tube of diaper rash ointment and she reaches for it and plays with it and it gives me enough time to get the diaper changed.

  • I'm struggling with diaper changes too. My LO will kick, try to roll over, etc.... I usually can occupy her with a toy or by singing a favorite song of hers. Other than that not much advice...it's still a battle most times.

  • Have you tried changing him while he's standing? Takes a little while to get used to but less difficult than when they decide to go kung fu on you laying down.
