Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Milk

What kind of milk to you give your toddler?  I am currently giving her whole milk. But I was just talking to a friend of mine, she said her pedi told her that 2% was ok. She said they are now linking whole milk to obesity?  Any one have thoughts?

Re: Milk

  • We were told whole milk until the age of 2.  That's what wedid with DD and will do with DS.

  • DD wasn't taking whole milk out of a sippy, so on a whim, i tried 2% and she drank it. Odd, but it worked. I called our pedi about a week later and asked if it was okay and she said it was fine. We feed DD full fat cottage cheese, yogurt, etc, so getting that necessary fat isn't a problem.

  • My daughter is just about 1 1/2 years old, and we just switched to 1%.  Before this we had only been giving her 2%, never whole.  She drinks 2-3 sippy cups of milk/day, and usually has some cheese and/or yogurt at some point too - so the dairy fats and proteins are coming from there, too.

I asked our pedi before we switched from formula whether we should give her whole or 2%, and she said that with DD's growth charts being what they are, 2% was just fine.  Not that DD is a giant or something, she's pretty average, or maybe a little on the high side average, but she's not WAY up there or anything.  We just recently changed to milk delivery direct from the dairy, and our dairy only has whole or 1%, so I called the pedi again, and she said to give her 1%.
