A New Father Quandry - The Internet Age

I can remember a time when the internet wasn't part of my life. This won't be so for my soon to be born son. How will this affect his life? When should our children start to surf the web? Check out the video and let me know your thoughts: https://youtu.be/ipdN53jdPGo

As long as my boy doesn't pay for internet porn, we are cool!

Can't watch the video at work. I haven't put much thought into when he'll be surfing the web. He'll probably use the computer for educational stuff. Then he'll probably be exposed to the web with school work and such. The web is a source of information and used for research so he'll most likely get on it when he needs that information.

As far as the inapropriate stuff goes. We'll just have to wait and see on that one.

    Don't bother....SPAM post!

That is why I cracked the free porn line on here....

  • Kids are now so techcentric that I don't know how parents can control access once they reach 3-4 grade without going hardcore about it.  Many of my cousin's kids have their own iPads in their 3 grade classrooms and all of their coursework is loaded up through that. The iPad is their books.

I know, in my house, once our children really start understanding the power of the internet, that will be when I do some serious website blocking.  There is software out there that will block sites based on search content.  The kids will get their own profile on the home pc, and that profile will have all kinds of blocks and monitoring on it.  The pc is for school work and skyping with the grandparents.  Facebook is not an option for the children until they are 16.  Youtube will be blocked. Luckily, I am computer literate, so I can get slick with them about it if need be.

Too many sickos out there, and too many opportunities for them to be introduced to things that we do not want them to be exposed to unless we are the ones exposing them. Yep, Hardcore!

  • This isn't a spam post.
  • Hey, this isn't a spam post. I don't know why the other guy said it was.
  • My wife and I have been pondering this for a while too. Internet was not a part of my life till college (clearly dating myself) and my wife spent her childhood reading books - you know, paper versions of the Kindle.

If i had it my way, they would have no internet or cell phone till they are 18, but that is not realistic these days.

I think for us it will all come down to working with them to make sure they use these tools the right way, and a healthy dose of keystroke snooping software...

Because it looks, smells and feels like spam.  especially with the broken link and all.  And you being so new around here.....

That is what the "other guy" thinks! (Love that movie)

I don't need tech support, I work in IT.  It was broken yesterday, and now it is not.  I love the "husband to the rescue" bit though...nice touch.

Well I would like to resolve the issue, so any information to lead me to the problem that you seem to be having would help me to fix the problem in my wife's post so that her post does not appear to be a "SPAM post". Can you tell me whether the link does not reach youtube, or if it does and does not display a video. What seems to be the problem with the link?

Edit: Glad to see the issue has been resolved...

Ok, regardless of whether it was spam or not. There have been a couple replies. Do we get a follow up response or the reason for the question now?

Well, thank you guys for all of your responses, I worry about the ease of access of technology that our children are going to have, on the basis of how things are now and the prediction of how things will be in the future. I also worry that my child can as easily bypass the boundaries set before him as both me and my wife have in our pasts. The reason is I am looking for some help, and you guys have been greatly helpful in knowing that I am not alone in my concern of it. For that i thank you.

I think being a very involved parent would greatly reduce the risk of what you fear. Kids getting into things they shouldn't with technology usually has something to do with the parents not being around very much and them having free access to it.

Your statement would also be true if you replace technology with alcohol/drugs. I worry about that more than technology.

Depends what age they are for me.  I worry much more about the computer (chatrooms, social media) for younger kids than I do drugs.  By 7th grade or so that will reverse for me, considering the age I was exposed to those things back in the day.  I hope by that time our children will have learned how to avoid those situations with confidence.

I must confess though, I was no angel by the time I was 16.  Not by any stretch.
