To Glide or Not to Glide?

Primarily due to a very small nursery space, but also in an effort to be cost-conscience about all these expensive baby things, I had early-on decided the glider was something we would skip.  A friend advised me this weekend that would be a mistake, to put it in the living room if that's what I had to do to fit it into our small apartment.  What do y'all think, to glide or not to glide, is it worth the space & cost?

  • They can be costly but a lot of times they have them on Craigslist for cheap. If used is not your style then try target they tend to have less expensive ones.

  • This is one of the things we skipped and I don't regret it. I sat on the couch to nurse and when I wanted to rock/bounce my baby, I stood!

  • We did not get a glider.  I didn't find them to be all that comfortable (within a reasonable price range anyway).  We used a regular armchair in DD's room and got a Lazyboy recliner for the living room.  I was really happy with our decision.  The recliner was wonderful when DD would nurse (for an hour at a time for pretty much the first 9 months).

  • I don't think you need a glider. My kids liked to be bounced, so I would either walk around or sit on an exercise ball and gently bounce. I do like having a cozy place in the baby's room to read books and sing, especially for bedtime. The cozy place could be a smaller chair or pillows on the floor.
  • I don't like the way typical gliders look so we opted for a regular rocker/recliner to put in LOs room. It is neutral so once he grows up we can easily put use it somewhere else in our house without it looking like it came out of the baby's room. I use it for MOTN feedings and my DH has slept in it a few times when DS has been exceptionally fussy and wouldn't sleep on his own as a newborn.

  • We didn't have one for space issues, and we didn't miss it.  We just used our couches for everything.  It was a bit weird when a friend with new baby came over and needed a place to nurse and all I had to offer was some pillows on the floor in the nursery though.  But that's a really lame reason to get a glider.  :)

  • I think it also depends on the baby, my daughter is two and still likes storytime on my lap in the glider before going down for naps or bedtime.  But my godson hated every second in a glider and his mother regrets ever getting one.

  • Thanks for all the responses!  Sounds like something we can do without - a relief with the space issues we have.

  • I didn't necessarily use my glider for nursing all the time, but I cherished getting to rock my baby to sleep every night.  Until my daughter was about 2 I rocked her to sleep in it every night.  It sounds excessive but my mom nailed into my head how I would never get that time back and I really lived by it.  My daughter slept through the night at a month old and as she got older if she got up it didn't take me rocking her back to sleep so it's not like this affected her sleep adversely.  Especially as your baby gets to be a toddler and they don't sleep in your arms as much, this special time to rock them is so sweet.

My daughter will be turning 7 later this year and I would give anything to be able to rock her to sleep again!  I'm 38 weeks pregnant now and I can't wait for this time with my new little one!  My situation is close to yours and I won't have the space for a glider in our nursery.  My first thought was to get a glider for the living room but unless I spend a LOT of money the look is just not my style.  We settled on an Ikea Poang chair which looks awesome in our living room and is completely comfortable and functional for rocking a little one to sleep!

  • We have one and never ever use it. Actually, I take that back. I put laundry on it when I don't feel like putting away clothes. I've always fed both kids either on the couch or while sitting in (my) bed. We don't rock our kids to sleep. It'd be gone by now if it weren't such a good laundry holder. lol

  • I love mine infancy I am thinking about getting another one for this baby. We still use it with dd who is almost 3 to read stories, rock her when she is sick etc. of all the thing I got from my baby shower it is the only thing I am still using 3 yrs later.
  • We skipped it and didn't regret it. We already had an IKEA Poang chair and just used that instead. As long as you have a boppy on your lap, there's no concern about bumping baby's head on the wooden arms. It's been fine. Plus, my son demanded that we stand and/or walk with him so it didn't get used much in the early months, anyway.

  • We bought an upholstered rocker for DS, and we still use it every night to read stories and do the bedtime routine.  We love it and this it was absolutely worth the space and cost.  So much so that we're buying another one for LO.  Even though we don't really have much space, we'll squeeze it into our bedroom!
