Straw cups

Dumb question but how do you get LO to drink with a straw?

DS only drinks from the take and toss sippy cups and is learning to drink with the lid off but is clueless when it comes to the straw. He won't suck on it.

Re: Straw cups

  • My DD just in the last 3 months or so has been able to use a straw and she is now 20 months old.  I've given up on the straw sippies though because I cannot find any that don't leak.

  • My DD has been using straws since 11 months...however, she still doesn't have luck with a sippy. Opposite problem!

I handed her a straw cup one day and she just did it...and that was the end of bottles.

  • I continuously offered them but she was just getting frustrated. We took a break and one day I just offered again. It was probably a month after I started the break. She took it like she has known how to the entire time. So, that's my advice. GL! :-)

  • When DS first started we used the Playtex one that you can squeeze the bottom to get the water up.  It leaks though, so we just used it until he caught on.

THESE!!! Are totally awesome. You do see quite a bit of backwash in them, but my daughter learned how to suck from a straw with these. Also, pouches. I squeezed a little into her mouth while her lips were around it and she then started sucking herself. She didn't start straw sippy cups until after we started pouches. She won't drink out of anything but a straw.

  • My husband sucked some liquid into the straw and pinched it off on the bottom.  He sort of tilted it in her mouth the first time, so a little dribbled on her tongue.  She caught on real quick after this.

  • DS has only ever really used a straw cup. We tried with regular ones and he just never got it. It still took us a few months for him to figure out the straw, so just keep trying! And maybe get some big straws for you to use so he can see you doing it too.

  • I didn't do anything. She just started sucking it one day maybe the third time I tried over several months. Maybe just offering it again and again. But mine would never take a bottle despite trying again and again when she was younger and just chews on anything soft and rubbery like some soft straws. I guess different kids just like different things. I am sure though that one day he or she will drink out of a straw when they get around to it. Something I've noticed is my child can't drink from certain straws if they need too much suction. The take and toss straw cups have worked for her.
  • DH and I both drink from "straw cups" (the reusable plastic cups with lids) because it's less likely to be knocked over and spilled by a flailing baby.  At around 5 months, my son started getting interested in what we had, so we'd let him play with ours.  He figured it out almost immediately.  At 6 months, instead of a sippy, we got him his own straw cup to drink water from. He's been using them fine since then.

  • We found the Lollacup Sippy to be the easiest for our little guy to suck from.  The straw is weighted to allow really young kids to start drinking from a straw.  I highly recommend it (from a mom who has gone through MANY sippys and straw cups!)
