Cloth Diapering

What is safe?

My DS has a VERY sensitive bum.  We have been battling diaper rash since day 1.  I just switched over to cloth diapers a little over a week ago.  Well the last time we went to the Dr. she instructed me to put aquaphor and cornstarch on his toosh each time I change his diaper, since doing this his bum has had ZERO rash. Once this cleared up she told me to put a light coat of Vaseline on his bum...well I just discovered that aquaphor and Vaseline is NOT cloth diaper safe.  I have read olive oil and coconut oil are both safe....I would like to know if anyone has used these due to extremely sensitive skin.  I need some advice here ladies.

 Thanks!

Re: What is safe?

  • Coconut oil is great! =) I have no experience with olive oil though.

If you'd like a CD safe creme that you could use as a preventative, check out Cj's BUTTer! Its my favorite. (superstash.net sells it) I also really like Grovia Magic Stick for the diaper bag. We've used Grandma E's to. We've liked all of them.

You probably need to strip your diapers if you've been using aquaphor and vaseline. There are directions in the FAQs. When I strip I just put them all in the washer with a squirt of Blue Dawn, then a hot wash and 6 or 7 rinses (until I don't see any suds) and that does the trick. It has to be the Blue dawn though!

I use coconut oil at every change. Highly recommend it for baby and as a nipple cream!

  • DS was very sensitive during his first few months.

Grandma El's was the best for helping to clear things up, especially when he was diapered for longer stretches, once he started STTN.  Just be aware that it has some kind of petrolatum in it (but it's different from other non-CD-safe creams and therefore is supposed to be CD-safe), so if you are concerned that it will make your diapers repel, you can use disposable liners or sposies when you have the Grandma El's on. I was putting Grandma El's on a large enough area that I didn't feel comfortable that a liner would stay in place, so for a while we used sposies at night. Then in the morning once I felt comfortable that all the Grandma El's residue had been absorbed either by the sposie or by DS's skin, I'd switch to cloth and use CJ's or Grovia Magic Stick.

Grovia Magic Stick is my favorite for the diaper bag. Glides on easy and calms down the redness.

I also use fleece liners with DS's overnight diapers, to help reduce the wetness against his skin.
