Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sippy Cup question! Please help!

Hi, I have an almost-1 year old. We tried to switch him to a sippy cup when he was around 8-9 months old. We had no luck. He hated it! We havent stopped trying and now he will take small sips. But now that he is almost a year old I want to be rid of the bottles. What kind of sippy cups do you guys find the easiest for transition? I have tried so many.

Re: Sippy Cup question! Please help!

  • Did you try one with a soft spout? My son will only drink out of a traditional style sippy cup with a silicone spout. He likes the Nuk ones. Otherwise, for drinking at meals, we use the Zoli straw cups, which he really does even better with.

  • I still haven't had much luck getting DD to use them.  She can drink well out of a regular cup if we hold it for her.  I got the Tupperware kids cups with the hard spout lid -- it's not spill proof, but it's the only kind she'll use at this point.

  • Straw cups are a good alternative if they don't like traditional sippies, and they are better for their oral development. Playtex makes a great "trainer" that you can get from Walmart or Target- you squeeze it, it brings liquid into the straw and teaches them to suck to get the liquid.

DS was able to drink water from a straw at 6 months on- it makes going out to restaurants far easier when I don't need to bring his own special cup! :)

  • This was the first one he had any real success with.

We tried these first, but he could only do it without the plug in, which equaled a giant mess.

Now he's able to drink from these, too.

He still hasn't figured out straw cups yet.

  • Mine had trouble switching but once I found a cup he liked it's been no problem at all. I did a nuby cup he hated but now he is using avent 6+ month with a soft spout and he loves it. It's a good transition cup.

  • My son has both of these. He figured out the Nuby within a week, but it took a few weeks with the Tommee Tippee. He likes both though. Regardless of which cup you choose, try letting him practice with water for awhile and then when he figures it out, introduce the formula/milk.
