Stella Popularity

My husband and I are team green and have had a boy's name picked out for some time, but haven't decided on a girl's name yet.  We want to use Spanish/Italian names because my husband is from Argentina and we will be raising the child bilingual.  We like Stella, but I am concerned about its popularity.  It was 89 in our state in 2011, and I'm also worried it sounds too much like the extremely popular Isabella/Ella/Bella.  What are your thoughts on the name's popularity?  We also like Luna, if you have any suggestions based on those names.

I like Luna more than Stella. To be honest, Stella just reminds me of the beer Stella Artois, and I think it does kind of have the Bella/Ella connection, which would be something that bothered me. 

The PP has some great Italian names. Other great choices would be Angelina, Eleonora, Caterina, or Maddalena.

Stella's fine, but I loooove Luna.

Stella is definitely gaining in popularity, and, in my opinion, it is definitely going to crack the top 50 in the next 3 to 5 years. I mean, it was #126 in 2009, #85 in 2010, and #73 in 2011. That means it still has plenty of momentum. It's already top-50 in 13 states (MN, CO, WA, KS, DC, OR, IA, NE, MA, IN, SD, VT, WI). But there are some states where it is much less popular ? it's ranked #200 or lower in WV, NM, and AK.

Whether it's too popular is up to you, but it's definitely popular.

FWIW, Luna is also experiencing a big surge in popularity. It's much less common than Stella (ranked #278 nationally, highest rank is #130 in CA), but it's also trending up.

I know several Stellas where I live, but I work in our church's nursery (a very big church) so I am in contact with a lot of babies and toddlers.  I personally don't like the name because it sounds like a stripper's name.  I just couldn't call a baby "Stella."

I like it, but I know two Stellas under two.  Plus four Ellas and one Bella.  If you want a relatively unpopular name, this isn't it.

Our neighbors have a little Stella.  I hear people mentioning it more and more as an option, both here and in my circles.  I think it's going to be trendy, if not ?ber popular, a la Violet and Mia.

I like Stella.. even better than Luna.. I also think of lunatic as a mean teasing name

OP our Stella is 3.5 and we have yet to meet another little one. There are none in preschool.

Huh, the last thing I get from Stella is stripper. Love the name, but the rising popularity is a turn off to me.

I agree regarding the stripper comment...I usually hear that it sounds like an old lady name!  Thank you for your response, as the mom of a little Stella your insight is helpful!

Love the name, but I somehow I know 3 under age 2? It must be popular in my region.
