has anyone tried an onion in bedroom for a cough?

My husband's mom is big on all-natural products and is well-read on all kinds of home remedies and such. (I am all for it but don't eat/buy 100% all natural organic food, products, etc.). Most of the time she annoys me with all of her suggestions and crazy solutions (because she is 100% in the lifestyle and wants us to be too), but she sent me some information about putting a sliced onion in a baby's bedroom to help with a cough.  Obviously it won't hurt anything if I try it, but was just wondering, has anyone tried this method and did it work?  DS has a cough right now so it's intriguing to me:)

I was told to do this by a friend. Thought ok I am desperate let me try it. I was coming down with a cold and cough. I used the brown skinned onion since I read that works best. Cut it in half and left it by my bed. I did the same thing the next night with a fresh onion. Seemed to work. I was not better for 2days but def never developed into a full blown cold.

I have heard of this and the science behind it makes sense. It has to do with the astringent qualities of the onion. My grandmother, who was very wise, used to have her kids sleep with onions in their socks when they were sick. My dad swears it helped... give it a try and let us know!

My aunt sent me the same email.  It's interesting... but I've never tried it.
