Neighbors

We live in a small neighborhood in MI. I love it here. It is perfect. It is an amazing place to raise and family and live. Recently we got new neighbors. I love meeting new people. So a few weeks ago we went over and said hello. Well recently the mom and dad have been standing outside around 1-3am screaming on the phone and swearing galore. This has not happened once but at least 5 times a week. We have 3 young children who do not need to hear these words and they need their sleep. Andy and myself need our sleep as well. Jillian came in around 2 this morning and said she can't sleep because they are screaming again. This is coming from and overly exhausted 4 year old. What would you do about it?

Well, I would probably be too nervous to confront them myself so.. I'd say if it doesn't get any better maybe call the police and report a disturbance? Yes they will know someone in the area called but they won't know who and I'm sure they'll be embarrassed.

My neighbors are giant douchebags too. We are in a townhouse and they smoke in theirs or outside the window of my nursery. They also like loud music with heavy bass. I have not figured out what to do yet except have the strata send them a letter which does nothing.

I did almost have their car towed once illegally parked in a fire lane but they ran out and saved it as the tow truck driver was hooking it up. Bastards.

I would confront them and express how you feel however if you are uncomfortable with that then call the police and report a noise disturbance.

I wouldn't confront them but I've had bad experiences in the past.  being new neighbors you don't know how they will react.  some people take it personally and then continue the behavior or get worse (I know very mature but it's happened to me before living in apartments).  I also almost confronted a few loud people outside a few years ago but decided not to and found out from another neighbor who called the police that one of them had a gun.  If you live in a neighborhood with a homeowner's association you could try notifying them first or call the police and file a noise complaint so they get the hint without knowing who reported them.  you could also leave a note on their door.

I wouldn't confront, next time it happens call the police. It's anonymous and might give them a heads up that they are being heard by the neighborhood.

I'd just call the cops. I don't think you can politely confront people about their own asinine behavior.

Ditto. I've called the cops on our neighbors before since I could hear them arguing quite aggressively at 3am, and also in the middle of the day. We're in an apartment and when the cops showed up they didn't say who called, just that they got a complaint about the noise. My husband tried to speak to them about their loud behavior and they just gave him lip service on how they'd stop but never did. So that's when we just started calling the police. Good luck!

Like pp mentioned maybe leave an anonymous note on their door when they are not home. That will give them a chance without involving cops. Maybe they are going through something difficult and don't even see how their behavior is disrespectful to others. I wouldn't confront strangers, you never know how they could react.
If they continue to do it then I would def just call the cops. This way if they seemed nice you gave them the benefit of the doubt, but if they are just jerks they get what they deserve.

Eta: maybe sign the note from your neighborhood....so they realize this probably affects everyone not just 1 family

 I agree with this.  As PPs have said, reporting a disturbance is anonymous -- plus, not only do you not know how these people will react to confrontation, you are also going to have to see them on a fairly frequent basis. 

ETA: Also want to add that this is completely ridiculous that you have to deal with this.  Good luck and I hope it is resolved soon.

We have the exact same problem in our neighborhood!  Unfortunately the police around here do nothing and they just continue the behavior.  We, fortunately, have the baby's room set up on the back of the house so it's not as noticeable and as soon as we can (two more years...we're counting), we're getting out of here.  We love our other neighbors, unfortunately one household has ruined the whole neighborhood for us!
