Can I please see a link to the train set that you have for your LO? I have no idea where to begin and what to look for. I believe that I want a wooden one though.
We started with the Melissa and Doug figure 8 and when he started really liking/using it more, we just bought a box of off-brand tracks that are compatible with all the big name brands (like M&D, Thomas, etc.).
DS loves this set. It only has 3 train cars plus 2 other vehicles. I have seen similar sets with more train cars. Might even be able to buy extra cars for it.
We have the basic imaginarium set and a chuggington set. I got some tracks from ikea thinking they would be compatible but the male ends don't fit with both the chuggington and imaginarium sets.
We have a crapton of Imaginarium Trains from BRU. They have held up very well, have a wide variety of reasonably priced accessories, and can easily fit with cheap track from amazon. Ds has played with his since 18 months and we just keep expanding out collection. I believe the Thomas trains (or at least some of them) fit on the tracks.
we are building a bigjig set - I was creeped out by the faces on the Thomas/Chuggington ones. It was recommended to me to get quality trains and cheap tracks.
We were looking into train sets for DS last year, and we decided on getting a wooden train set. Our lil guy loves thomas. So we started him out with the "Thomas & friends wooden railway set - Thomas & Percy starter set." From toys r us.
It was a big hit!
for Christmas we got him the "Imaginarium City Central Train Table" from toys r us. We wanted a table or board for his train sets, this table is wonderful for my very active 2yr old. It came with a lot of track pieces, a few trains, and lots of accessories. Along with quite a few big pieces such as a round house, crane, bridge, heliport, train station, car wash, & a few other things I'm probably forgetting. However we hit Black Friday full steam ahead and got a few Thomas & Friends pieces (or destinations as they word it) and track sets.. So his table only has 2 of the Imaginarium destinations and a few Thomas ones too. From what I've read and personal experience lots of the wooden trains are interchangeable; Thomas and friends WOODEN railway, brio wooden trains, Imaginarium wooden trains, circo wooden trains at target and a few others can all be interchanged.
We have a bunch of Thomas, Imaginarium, and Circo trains around our place.
We have Thomas. Look on craigs list and wait for sales. I have also gotten good deals on some of the daily sale web sites. Both kids love them and DS1 will be 5 on Monday. DS2 has been putting together the tracks himself for at least a year.
We don't have pad under our carpet in the basement so they take over the whole play area with a track. It is really fun.

This! Later, if you want something fancier, you can mix and match
