Thumb sucking?

Just curious- At what age do you consider constant thumb sucking a habit that needs to be broken, if at all?

Re: Thumb sucking?

  • I'm wondering the same thing.  Ds is a finger-sucker.  I have noticed it is not as frequent as when he was little, but I'm thinking I will start discouraging it around five to prepare for kindergarten.  Maybe preschool will help though?

  • I have read that most kids drop it around age three on their own.  I wouldnt worry about it until then.

this was our experience. DS was a finger sucker and has recently stopped on his own (he is 3 years, 4 months). Every once in a while he'll still suck them when he's really tired but its basically become a none issue.

I did bring it up at two dentist appointments and the dentist said that they're not concerned about it until age 5.
