Fundal Height suddenly measuring behind?

I know it's really not an exact science but has anyone had experience with this?

I've had several leaps and jumps in my measurements but usually ending up right on time.

I measured 31 almost 32 weeks at my appointment but of course I'm 36 weeks. My MWs were not concerned but as normal I ran off to google what this might mean.

Several things said it could be attributed to the baby dropping into the pelvis and is especially true for tall women (I'm 5'8).

I've firmly believed for weeks / months that I'm having a mammoth-baby that will dwarf my other two 6 and 7 lb babies but I'm now I'm questioning that (not that it's a bad thing to not have a ginormous baby ;-)

Anyway, thoughts, experiences?

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it.  At about 35 weeks, my midwives stopped measuring me because they said it was no longer accurate, particularly if the baby dropped.

FWIW, two separate midwives guessed that my baby would be 6 to 6.5 lbs in my last few weeks just by feeling my belly, and they were right.  My LO was 6 lbs, 3 oz.

  • My measurements were always behind.  As you said fundal height is not an exact science. My guess would be that the baby has dropped. I would not worry about it, especially if your MW is not concerned.
  • My measurements with my last one started to be off by about 2 weeks starting at 36 weeks, and she ended up ring y biggest baby yet! I think that late inthe game it's difficult to measure.

  • It can really depend on baby's position from one appointment to the next.
  • Sounds like baby dropped.  :)

  • I measured 3 to 4w ahead with most of DD's pg. I think it was at my 36w appt that I suddenly was 4w behind. My OB wasn't concerned but could see I was and I had major PgAL brain so he ordered an ultrasound. Everything was fine, she just dropped.

  • That happened to me around 36 weeks too. I am also 5'8" and the baby had dropped. It is common.  No more googling! :-)

  • I was measuring right on track, until 36 weeks. I am 38 weeks, and measuring 35, Dr. said it's due to baby dropping and not to worry.
