June 2013 Moms

Well, that was a jolly good 'ole time.

It's after 1am, and I just spent the last two and a half hours trying to deskunk my dog. H is at work overnight.

My.entire.house.smells.like.skunk.

I washed her three times. I used baking soda and peroxide and did two soapy dishwashing detergent washes, then poured mouthwash on her, then washed her again with my Herbal Essences, lol. She still stinks...or maybe it's just stuck in my nostrils because it was soooo strong. Poor thing is miserable [she is terrified of baths] and laying on my old bathrobe in the kitchen. I cleaned the tub a jillion times because I'm worried about residue. Then wiped down the whole bathroom. Then FeBreezed the whole living room. Then washed the floors where she walked. Then showered.

Then posted on the bump about it.

I'm beat and my back is killing me. G'night ladies. Send me all your 'hope your dog doesn't smell like shitt in the morning' vibes, plz. :]

  • If she still smells in the morning try giving her a bath in tomato juice.  That is the only thing I know that gets the smell out.
  • Noooooo. I'm sorry :/ That stinks.

    See what I did there?

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Dude that sucks! Sorry you had to deal with that so late at night. Hopefully the poor thing smells squeaky clean in the morning!

  • If the dog still stinks in the am try using douche.. Crazy as it may sound my vet advised it and it was the only thing that worked
  • My dog got sprayed in October, but luckily I was the one not home!! H used the same concoction you used, we saw it on Myth Busters and it worked for my parents' dog. It did get the stink off my dog, but my house smelled for about a week. Ugh!!! H even washed him outside since it wasn't too cold out. Good luck!!!

THIS! I worked at a dog grooming salon for 4 years and we saw many skunked dogs. DO NOT USE TOMATO JUICE! Get medicated douche! It is the ONLY thing that works, leave it on the dog for ten minutes before rinsing. GL!
  • That really puts one's evening into perspective.  I thought I had it bad cleaning up dog pee, cat poop (not in the cat box, stupid cat), and cat vomit all in one evening.  I don't think I could have dealt with skunk!

I hope your puppy smells much better this morning!

  • worst smell ever! I have heard that tomato sauce helps get rid of the smell but I am sure that would be difficult to use on a dog depending on the size

  • Thanks everyone! The verdict is...she actually doesn't smell all that bad today. I guess I caught it early enough and was thorough enough that I was able to wash a lot of it away.

We tried tomato juice on my childhood dog years ago and it didn't work at all; she just smelled like tomato sauce and skunk, lol. This baking soda/peroxide concoction is the newest rec, I guess there's some science behind it. Hoping to not have to douche my dog today. Ha, that sounds terrible...

    Thanks for the suggestions!
