Babies: 0 - 3 Months

pediatrician visits

My newborn is 2 weeks old. We took him to the pediatrician at the 1 week mark. Doctor said he was perfect and to come back in 1 month.
Is this normal? I thought we would have to go more often in the beginning.

Re: pediatrician visits

  • Unless LO has weight gain issues, that's pretty standard.

  • With my DD we went at 1 week, 2 weeks,  1 month, 2 month, 3 month, 4 month, 6 month, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, and 2 years. Now we just go annually.

With DS I was shocked to hear that he does 1 week, 2 week, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, and so on. It's much less than DD.

  • I took DS to his pediatrician at almost a week old, then three weeks and our next appointment isn't until his two month mark.
  • We went when our LO was 1 week, 1 month, 2 months and we have our next appointment when he's 4 months.

  • We went the day after we got home, the 2 weeks mark, and then we dont go back until 2 months. Then it continues for every 2 months I think.

This is how our appts have been as well because DS has gained weight so well.

  • I think that's pretty normal. We went at 5 days and then not again till 1 month. We did bring her for a weight check at 2 weeks, but not an actual appointment.

  • Doctors will base frequency of visits upon several factors. 1.how YOUR baby is growing, 2.any other issues you may have, 3.how long they have known you, 4.first child or subsequent, 5.how busy the doctor is with other patients.

Most doctors will schedule the minimum appointments with you if they know you and have no concerns for the child. That would be 'first week after birth', 2weeks to 1 month, 2 months (for shots), 4 months (for shots), 6 months (for shots), 9 months (maybe) and 12 months.  All appointments should include length, weight and head measurement. And should ask about any concerns by you and the doctor.

If there are issues or concerns, they may see the child more frequently (monthly).

I have a new doc this time around, we were back at hospital for blood work twice after baby was born. We saw our doc at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months and will see him at 4 months.  If you're concerned, ask your doctor.

  • We went when she was about a week old, then 1 month, next will be 2 months, 4 months, 6, 9 and 12.

  • Our office does 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months.... etc from there.

We just had a 2 week in-between the 1 week & 2 month. Since we had no weight issues there were not reason to go more often.

  • Our doctor's standard well baby appts are 5 days, 1 mo, 2 mo, etc. We had to go 5 days in a row at first because of severe jaundice then again a few days later for a weight check. It depends on your baby but if they're healthy then it's just once a month basically.
