Milkshakes are a no go?

I just mentioned to a pregnant friend that I was headed to McDonalds for a shamrock shake and she said I was a rule breaker for having a milkshake and she thought it was something about listeria... is this a "rule"? Not that it would change my plans of milkshakes in the future, but I was just curious!

  • Um, no. Have as many milkshakes as you can possibly handle! I drank them all the time with dd and have had a couple this time too!
  • I personally never heard of this being a risk. The only thing I can imagine is that if the nozzle that dispenses the soft serve ice cream or the mixer isn't cleaned regularly that it can maybe have harmful bacteria.

But other than that I'm drawing a blank.

Also, I now have a milkshake craving. lol

  • Blah blah blah... Eat your milkshake and enjoy it. I ate them throughout my last pregnancy and this one to.and they were ALL delicious! Lol
  • I assume what your friend is referring to is the fact that the bacteria that causes listeria can indeed build in the machines that milkshakes, soft serve, frozen yogurt, etc. come out of.

If we stopped eating and doing things based on every worry out there though, pregnant women would literally be stuck in the house all day doing nothing! That being said, I've had a few strawberry milkshakes from mcdonalds so far this pregnancy and they were delicious.

Listeria is actually more common in uncooked vegetables and certain fruits.  And no one tells us to avoid them.

Haha! That is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

  • I had jury duty yesterday (in which I was put on a messy criminal trial scheduled for mid-March)...  Anyway, my reward for my civil duty was a shamrock shake, and I am not looking back!  Cool
  • I know quite a few people who avoid them...not high on the list of worries for me!

  • Yum I want a shamrock shake now and I have never had one before lol are they good??
  • In the Bounty Pack we get over here from our midwives, their is a food safety brochure and all soft serve products are listed as a definite no go.

I haven't thought to avoid them though, but I'm also not a big fan normally so haven't felt the need to go after them either.

I say have your milkshake and enjoy. My general rule of thumb for these less threatening foods has been if there are brands/products I've never been sick off before, then they're probably ok.

  • Technically soft serve ice cream can be a risk if the machines aren't maintained properly. I wouldn't worry about McDonald's but I didn't eat any soft serve when I was in Mexico because I wasn't sure how often and meticulously the machines got cleaned.

Honestly, they used to be better, but a couple of years ago, they changed the syrup formula and now I think they taste too fake.

I worked at McDonald's in high school, and easily 10lbs of the weight I'm carrying today was put on drinking Shamrock shakes those 3 years. :) They used to be amazing. Now, I'd recommend just going to Steak 'n' Shake or Sonic and getting a mint shake there.

    Thanks!

I could never work at Mcdonalds. I would eat waaaayyyy to many fries!

  • I love the response this thread is getting too!  "WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE CAN"T HAVE MILKSHAKES!!" scream a bunch of hormonal, hungry, pregnant women! lol

  • I am so over the food hysteria and suggestions from people re: what we can/can't eat while pregnant!!!  It seems to change all of the time.  I have said it once and will say it again, at the end of the day, there are women in third world countries that have no prenatal care and live in huts with bare floors and without running water and they are still giving birth just fine.  Other than no alcohol, I eat what I want!
  • I've heard of this, but I really think its fine.  As PPs have said, have the milkshake :)

  • Thanks everyone! I am not really a worrier about all the different things they say you should or shouldn't do - I guess I just wanted to be reinforced by my statement to her that they were, most certainly, ok to have and that I was still definitely having one, which was delicious btw!

  • My OB was fine with milkshakes, it's just that my DH ratted me out when telling her I had one every other night. Now she told him and me only once a week! WTH?!?? She only told me to stay away from cantelope because that food has had more cases of listeria than other foods.
  • I would not be worried! My two favorite things are chocolate milk shakes and French fries. My husband asked my doctor about milkshakes and he said that I was free to have as many as I would like! Enjoy your milkshakes!
