How easy it...

...to install a convertible carseat?

Like moving it from one car to another? How long/complicated would you say it is?

We have a Chevy volt and a Mazda crossover SUV.

Of course having one for each car is always most convenient, but out of curiousity just wanted to see your answers.

Re: How easy it...

  • I have a Diono Radian and despise moving it. It's not difficult to install, but extremely heavy. I have a cheap Cosco Scenera for my niece that I install and uninstall weekly. It's a pain, but not difficult. So, I guess it would depend on your carseat.

  • We never move ours because it is a pretty big PITA. It's easier for us to just trade cars if I have to drive DS somewhere.

We trade cars too. DH is a safety freak and we cannot move the seat unless the fire department installs it again. I think they know us at the station.

We have a Graco convertible (I'm not sure what model off the top of my head), and it's a PITA, but not really hard. We switch it back and forth every week or two between my car and DH's truck, and it takes about five minutes and a lot of cursing.

We have two Britax seats. We don't switch all that often, so I am sure it would easier to do if we did after a while. But it isn't terribly difficult, but there is a lot of cursing.

  • I have a radian with an angle adjuster and it isn't that hard. That said, we only change it for long car trips, so every other month or so.

  • I have Radians. They are amazing seats, but heavy and not fun to move. So, very difficult in my case. I am also very anal about installation.

  • IMO, it's a total pain!

on top of the fact I want the car seat installed properly, which means DH has to do it... We have a cheaper 2nd seat in DH car because they are in his jeep much less than my car. If this is an option for you, I would highly recommend it.

Why you all cursing if it's so easy...huh...HUH!!!???

    It's a PITA, that's why.

    Just sayin.

    lolz!  But srsly, WSS.
  • I try to avoid if at all possible.

She peed in her seat this week and I had to take it out. I was not pleased.

    I agree they're heavy, but...
I was about to say it wasn't bad and then I remembered all the steps.
Loosen the latch, unclip. Remove from car.

Close and lock car one. Carry to car two, unlock and open. Slide front passenger seat all the way forward and tip.

Put seat in. Fumble to get all the straps out from underneath. Shove into place.

Attach latch, untwisting the somehow twisted strap. Fumble to find the damn latch and get it to click.

Tighten a bit, lift the rear of the seat, and slide the angle adjuster in. Make sure it's even.

Tighten the strap first by tugging, then kneeling on the seat and tugging, then heaving at the goddamn strap.

Make sure the angle adjuster doesn't slip. Try not to fall on your ss while heaving away at the strap while on wet pavement. Because it's always rainy when I need to swap.

Double check all straps are straight and not caught up. Double check it doesn't shift an inch side to side. Slide passenger seat back into position.

Usually I sweat enough to wear just a tshirt, even in winter.

  • It really depends.  Are you talking about the occasional move?  NBD but if you're talking about frequent moving it's going to depend on the seat and your car.  DH has a Cosco Scenera in his car just in case and it's rarely used.  That thing is such a GD PITA to install RF that you couldn't pay me to move it.  We move the Britax out of my car and into my IL's sometimes if we go visit and are going to take their car.  It's not something I'd want to do all the time but it's doable.
