Success after IF

That was quick - biopsy results back

My doctor called me last night.  Nice of him to call me at home after hours but way to freak a person out.   Anyway, it's not all good news and it's not all bad news but really, I wish there wasn't any bad news at all, but there is.

The biopsy of the worse of the two lesions actually came back totally clean (good news).  He thinks the first biopsy actually took all the bad cells as there was nothing wrong with any of the tissue he took on Monday.

The biopsy of the "better" of the two lesions came back NOT showing clean margins (bad news).  We're left not knowing if there are any bad cells still there.  When they take the tissue they cauterize the edges and my doc said he moves out even further than necessary to try and make sure to get any and all bad cells but you can't know if you got them all if there aren't clean margins.

So, I'll have another pap in three months.  There's nothing that can be done now since my cervix has to heal before they can tell anything more.  Hopefully that pap will be good and I can move on and start thinking about hurrying up and doing a frozen embryo transfer.  If my pap is bad though then I'm in trouble.  My doc said he'd do another Leep to try and preserve my fertility but that his honest opinion would be that I should get a hysterectomy.  Ugh.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I'm sorry about the bad margins. Why are they recommending a hysterectomy? I know this is kind of a sensitive subject but I've had abnormal paps. I think I've had 4-5 leeps and 1 cone biopsy. That's part of the reason Dh and I are going to try for another baby ASAP after this baby is born. Because of the frequent abnormal paps, damage to my cervix from the biopsies and leeps, and my endo I will get a hysterectomy after that. They didn't start to recommend it until I had numerous issues so I wouldn't rush into a hysterectomy if you're not ready.
  • Sorry you have to be in limbo for the next few months. Hopefully he got everything.

He's only recommending the hysterectomy if my paps continue to be abnormal and I remain HPV positive.  I'm 41 so I'm at the end of my child-bearing years.  We're done trying on our own or doing treatments other than doing a frozen embryo transfer so that we can give our little frosty it's best chance at life.

A big reason he's saying hysterectomy is how quickly my condition happened.  I had a pap test done 10 months ago in the first trimester of my last pregnancy and it was totally normal, as had all the ones for about six years prior been normal.  So, things went from normal to CIN III lesions in around 10 months.  Things aren't supposed to happen that quickly with cervical cancer so I think my doctor is concerned that if there still are bad cells it would be better to rid myself of things altogether rather than risk it coming back, being missed on a pap or having it happen again so fast and become invasive cancer.  Right now I'm just hoping I don't need to have that discussion ever, or at least until after we do the frozen transfer and hopefully have our last baby.

I hope things go smoothly with you.
