Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Meat

We are planning to try some meats with LO in the next month.  Right now she eats purees of fruit or veggies or cereal.  We aren't doing BLW.  She's had puffs (eats those fine), bananas mashed up (refused to eat it, but will eat banana puree), and a green bean (wouldn't eat it, but eats green beans as a puree).  I am not going to give her babyfood meat because it just is not appealing.  How do you make meat for your LO and how do you serve it (puree, etc).

Re: Meat

  • I have never given my LO store bought baby food so when I introduced meat to LO I had the same question. The first thing I did was chicken, I cooked in the crockpot until in was very soft and shredded then I mixed it with sweet potatoes which he loves. For pork tenderloin I did the same thing but mixed it with cream of corn so it was soupy. And beef I actually made a beef stew in the crockpot for him with potatoes, celery, carrots and a beef broth. Hope this helps!

  • I was nervous to introduce meats as well. Not the most appealing thing when its completely plain. I live in ontario and here peds are highly pushing meats before fruits and veggies so we had to puree because he was not ready for anything else.

I ended up only giving tiny bits before veggies though because he hated it. It was much easier mixed with the veggies. I have had success making very smooth purees though. The key is having the meat cold before you puree it. You can coo your meat however you want (chicken, beef, pork etc). Just put it in the fridge so its cold. Then blend the meat until it makes almost a powdery look. Then add a bit of water (about 1/4 cup to 1 cup of meat) and blend.

It ends up smooth but still not great (i mean it is plain meat). I add a bit of steamed sweet potato (just a small 1/2 inch chunk) for a bit of flavour and moisture and my son takes it very well.

Our DS is eating puffs and cheerios now so he can take small very soft pieces of meat that way too, but you might get some gagging at first because the taste of meat is pretty shocking to them.

    good luck!

  • My dh made turkey burgers last week. He added diced apples, garlic powder and salt. Then I took a hand held blender and mushed it and added avocado. It worked!

  • I put a chicken breast in the crock pot overnight. It fell apart when I went to get it out which made shredding a breeze. I put it in the blender and just tapped a few times to get it quickly shredded. Froze left overs in the ice cube tray. When I served it I mixed it with sweet potato or cheese ..

  • I started meats at the same time we started solids at 6 months. I have done a combination of purees and tablefood.  I just gave DD whatever meat we were eating pork, chicken, ground meat, salmon cut up very small. She loves meat...probably more than veggies. And she loves picking up the pieces and feeding herself.
  • Like PP, any shredded meat works well.  Meatballs are also great because they're soft and easy to cut into manageable pieces.

  • I have not given DS much meat yet but basically I just plan on giving whatever meat I cooked for dinner either shredded or in little chunks. I have given him the chicken breast from the can like a tunafish can - I didn't give him tuna. He did well with that, I gave him small chunks and even mixed in his purees.

  • I refuse to puree meat, so my son only gets small bits or shreds of meat off of our plates. He's never had any issues with choking or gagging and seems to really like it, especially pork.
