Turning head to one side only

I've started to notice the last few days that DS only likes to turn his head to the right. Has anyone else noticed this happening? Is it normal? He has really good head control, but he won't turn his head to the left on his own. He has his 2 month appointment on Friday, so I'm hoping the doctor will reassure me about this.

Re: Turning head to one side only

  • Could be torticollis, neck muscles on one side are tighter than other. Also, could just be preference. Definitely bring it up to your pedi though, if he needs PT it is easier to start earlier on. When he does tummy time try to have him look the way opposite way he always looks, it will stretch the muscles if they are tight. To clarify... If he looks to the right, put his right ear toward the floor.

  • Our Dr. just pointed this out to us today about our LO. He noticed that one side of her head was a little flat and asked us if she turns her head to the right all the time. After thinking about it I realized she did do that. He suggested turning her head the opposite direction when she does tummy time and that she might fuss when we do it because the muscles on that side are getting tight from not being used as much. I've started laying her down the opposite direction when changing her diaper and will do the same when putting her to bed. The Dr. said it should correct itself in time.
  • You say he only turns his head to the right ... Let me ask you this - when you talk to him is it always on that side so he turns toward where the sound is coming from?

Then you need to turn him around so that he hears from the other side and will turn toward where the sound is now coming from. This might be the reason he only seems to turn in that one direction.

I'd try this so you'll know! GL

  • I just posted pretty much the same thing yesterday on the January board. My son is 7 1/2 weeks old. He can keep his head up straight no problem but anytime he lays down/sleeps he favors his left side and has developed a flat spot on that side. He will lay on the other side if he is on my chest and i put him there. I took him to the dr. on Monday and my pediatrician said to put him to sleep on his side, resting on the other side of his head and to prop a towel behind him to keep him that way. I ordered a Snuza because I was paranoid about side sleeping! He normally sleeps in a cradle but tonight we put him to sleep in his rock n play and put a rolled up blanket underneath one side to prop him on the nonflat side.
  • Thanks for all the advice. I will definitely check with the pediatrician about it.

  • Our chiro said our DS prefers turning to the right so he has us stimulate him to his left. And we watch his postioning carefully when he is in his RNP, swing, bouncer, etc. DS has been to the chiro twice since birth...it's pretty calming the little adjustments they do....I was afraid it would be traumatic but DS hasn't fussed once while there.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • at our 2 month appt, the pedi noticed LO was developing a bit of a flat spot on the right side and asked if she favored it...we realized she had been. The pedi checked her to make sure she had full neck movement to both sides (she did) and told us to just kind of pay attention to it and try to keep the action on her left side for awhile to make sure those muscles don't get too tight. The good news is, she said it should all work itself out when LO starts sitting up (she's close) so I'm not too worried about it as long as she still has full range of motion to both sides.

  • Eloise defiinitely favors her right, we've been trying to change it but it's not going well! We head to the pedi today but it seems like we need to work some more tummy time in every day.
