Dentist?

DH just called me with his panties in a twist because one of his friends told him that kids are supposed to see the dentist before their 1st b-day. I think this is kind of silly -- how are they supposed to get a 1 year old to open his/her mouth??

Have any of you taken your LO to the dentist? Am I totally nuts?

Re: Dentist?

  • I think I remember our pedi saying around 2, unless there is an issue you are concerned about before then. We didn't put DD on our dental plan this year, so she'll also be going in 2014 :)

  • Gator has like 13 teeth and hasn't gone to the dentist. I did talk to my dentist and he said that usually bringing LO in is just so LO will get to check the place out, the dentist can talk to the parents about how teeth brushing is important and how to get your kid to let you brush, and to pick out a "prize". He said as long as we are brushing and don't notice any oral problems, she didn't need to come in until 3 years old.

  • E is on our dental plan but I've been dragging my feet on taking her. I figured I would do so sometime this summer.

  • I took Emma to the dentist when she was about 14 months. They had me put her on my lab facing me & the dentist sat knee to knee with me. We then laid her down & the dentist opened her mouth & took a quick look around & dabbed some flouride gel onto her teeth. She did great.

Our dentist said that once they have teeth it's a good idea to start, if for no other reason then to get them used to it.

  • We took C to a pediatric dentist right after she turned one.  She did great - sat quietly and let the dentist do her thing.  The whole exam lasted like a minute.  We take her back in May.

  • When I worked at a dental office, we advised patients to bring their children in at age 3, unless there was a problem.  My dental hygienist friend who words at a pediatric dental office suggests age one.  Lastly, when I talked about this with my dental hygienist yesterday, she said the latest findings where to come in 6 months after the eruption of their first tooth.

The first visit will be a 'happy visit' anyways, just to see the dental office.  I'm going to go ahead and make an appt. for C because he's on our insurance, and his visit will be covered 100%.  Tell your DH to take a deep breath and untwist those undies Smile

  • My pedi told me that unless and issues came up, DD should see the dentist sometime between 2 and 3.

  • Our pedi said 2 to 3 for DD1, but DD2 has a cleft palate which apparently makes her more prone to cavities. They want her to see a dentist by the time she's 1.
  • We were told between 2 and 3.  Hopefully we'll have dental coverage by then. . .Tongue Tied

Also, tell your H to get off his butt and take the kid to the dentist then.  Don't whine to you about it if he thinks it should be done now.  I've never heard of going before the age of 1, but do know some people are told to go around the first birthday.  If you have a family history of mouth problems or feed your kid a lot of sugary foods, it is better to go earlier rather than later.

  • My friend just took her 10 month old son and I kind of had that, oh crap I haven't done that yet moment. But at the same time B has 8 teeth, 4 of which he just got over the last few weeks. If I would have taken him at 1 he would have had 2 teeth, so I think that in our case it wasn't necessary. We brush his teeth twice a day and he loves it, so I am not too concerned, but I will probably take him by 2 as that's what my pediatrician recommends.

  • We were told 4 or so, they really won't see them before then. We could bring her in WITH us at our appointment to meet them and see but that would involve another adult coming and MH works so much it couldn't be him and I just don't feel like dealing with her there. She's on our dental insurance just in case something was wrong or she had some kind of injury or needed oral surgery.
  • Our pedi told us last week that they are seeing cavities earlier and earlier. He recommended 12 months or 10+ teeth. We will probably go soon.

  • My 2.5 yr old hasn't been to dentist yet, so no... DS hasn't either. Whoops, this thread makes me look like a mommy fail. I planned to take my DD this spring/summer. DS was going to be next year but I may double up appts.

  • Our pedi told us to take DD before she turns two. I'm putting if off as long as I can since DD is a bit of a squirmy one.
  • Nope. My DD only has 6 teeth. When she is 2 ish I will bring her with me just so she can see Mama go to the dentist. The dental hygenist said if DD is willing, then she will just count her teeth just so she gets used to opening her mouth for someone.
