Safe to exercise?

I'm 23 weeks and for the last couple of months, I've felt fantastic and really got back into my swing of working out and even added some running back to my routine. But over the weekend I was put on antibiotics for a bladder infection. I had no symptoms, I just started peeing blood on Saturday. Very scary! Anyways, been on the antibiotic for three days and haven't had any complications, feeling perfectly normal. I forgot to ask my midwife today if I'm cleared to go back to my regular workout routine. Anyone have experience with that?

  • I would take it slow...running may not be the best option to go back to. I read somewhere to not have heart rate go above 140 when exercising while pregnant. Just be aware the more strenuous the workout it may cause problems and bleeding can reoccur.

That's really old school advice that isn't accurate. There's really no scientific reason for that number.

My heart rate is generally in the 130s to 140s when I do cardio right now, but that's because I'm big and slow. Up to the 3rd trimester, my heart rate was in the 140s to 150s for cardio. I've slowed down because I get cramping in my lower right belly if I try to push too hard.

If you're feeling fine, I would start slow and just let your body tell you when you've done too much. I can't see how a bladder infection would be related to or caused by exercise.

  • Be really careful if you are going to workout - definitely talk to your midwife.

I had the same issue with a bladder infection (and dehydration) that caused preterm labor at 33 weeks. They put me on antibiotics, too, and the magnesium sulfate drip which postponed delivery for 2 weeks at least. They gave me a steroid shot to speed up baby's lung development, too.

I did continue running at a very easy pace up to delivery. Whether that caused preterm labor or not, the doctor said the preterm labor wasn't anything I could control, sometimes it just happens.

In the end, my little boy was born at 35w 1d and, besides being small, he is perfectly healthy (which is rare that early - huge answer to prayer)! Take it easy and do what's best for you and the baby!

Oh, and the heart rate limit is an old guideline now and not relevant :s
