March 2013 Moms

Sorry to post twice but, maternity leave?

I wanted to take some time "off" of teaching to prepare for LO and our big move into our own house. I quit teaching in December and have since been working in a tea room on Saturdays and substitute teaching about 3 days a week.

My SO told me this morning that he would like me to take my "maternity leave" now because I must not realize how pregnant I really am. I feel fine but decided to not work any more Saturdays at the tea room after this past one and I would really hate to go into labor while subbing.

Anyway, JW when you ladies are going on maternity leave? I kind of just figured I would keep working until he is born...

  • I'm a teacher as well and I will be teaching up until he is born. :)
  • I taught first grade with my first until the day she was born. Got off work and went into the hospital at ten that night. With my second, I retired at Christmas and had him in June!!!

  • I'm working right up until I'm in labor. I want as much PTO after the baby gets here and not use it up before.
  • My c/s is scheduled for 3/22, so my last day of work is 3/18.  I wanted a couple days to spend with DD, just us girls before baby brother arrives.  I'm getting really tired now (I also teach), so I keep telling myself that I can start my leave whenever I want.  However, I know myself, and barring anything unusual, I know I'll be there until the 18th.

  • I am a teacher as well and am working until this Friday.  So March 1st is my last day, and my due date is March 13th.  So I am going until I am 38 weeks 2 days.  I am taking off the rest of the year so I will be taking some unpaid time anyway at the end of the year.  My sister is coming into town to stay with us  for 2 weeks so I wanted to be able to spend time with her as well.  4 more days, I can't wait!
  • I teach grade 6 and have been on sick leave for the last 6 weeks. I can't believe how quickly the time has gone by (probably because it was an unexpected leave so I was still planning and doing prep for my subs etc for most of that time). I'm still on sick leave but now another teacher has been hired to replace me. My maternity leave doesn't technically start for a few more weeks though. I honestly couldn't imagine still working because of the pain I'm in. So kudos to you moms who are still truckin'! :)

  • My last day at work was last Friday and I have a Csection scheduled for 3/4, so I'm only taking one week off before DD arrives. I was hesitant I do it, but am so glad I did. I really needed this week to finish the three million things I want to get done before dday.
  • I'm a high school teacher and will teach until I go into labor.

  • I am a HS Counselor and today was my last day of work.  I am due 3/26.  I figure that I am taking the rest of the year off and returning in September regardless of when I go out on leave, so why not take the full 4 weeks before to get organized, relax and rest.  I will be taking a the end of my leave unpaid as well as the summer but luckily we are comfortable enough financially that the money aspect is not an issue.  I was more concerned that I would retain my medical benefits through my entire leave, which I will since my state has an additional 12 weeks protected family leave on top of FMLA.

  • So many brave women on here! I can't imagine working up until I deliver. My due date is 3/9, and I'm working my last day on Friday. In a way, I'm kind of already on leave because I'm actually taking vacation all this week except for Friday, and then I'm only coming in to work on some projects that I have started so that I don't have to have too many reassigned before I officially go out.

I completely admire you ladies who are planning to work right up until you deliver. I'm too much of a wimp to even think of going that far. I've been so uncomfortable at work and I work 10 hour days at a call center. While not the worst job you can have, it definitely has its moments of high stress that my hormones have not helpd me with! Also, I just would rather not deal with the stress of knowing I could actually go into labor at any time, and that time could be while I'm on the phone with a customer. It's not like I can exactly say, "Excuse me, sir. Can you forget about your broken refrigerator for a minute while I time these contractions?" or, "I'm sorry I can't send this e-mail to the manufacturer for you. My water just broke and  have to GO!" haha

  • I work FT as an RN and I do 12 hour shifts. I plan on working until I deliver. Like other posters, I want to save my time for when my LO gets here. I also go to grad school PT too with a midterm next Friday! I'm freaking out more about that exam than when will I start labor! She can come anytime after 2 next Friday!
  • I work at an elementary school and Friday is my last day before my leave starts... I'll be almost 39 weeks... Just can't do it anymore with being on my feet all day!!

This.. My company has no maternity, so I am using all PTO for maternity.. I have a good 4 weeks and then I am going to work from home for 2 months after, but I don't want to waste ANY of those days off until Shea makes her grand debut (which is NEVER going to happen!! LOL) I sit at a desk all day, if I was on my feet all day I may be singing a different tune.

  • I am working right up until my due date, or I go into labor, whichever comes first.  With no. 1, I worked on my due date, and he was born 8 days later.  Sitting around the house for a week was torture.  I just have this feeling that this little guy will be another late baby, too, although my husband is convinced he will be early/on time.

  • I am a scientist and taking 1 week vacation before my due date.  If the baby isnt here as of my due date, I will get induced.  Good luck ladies!

  • I am going out the week before I am due. My job is an hour away and the last thing I want to do is have my water break when I am at work, especially since I carpool!
  • Recent studies have shown that working the last month of pregnancy can negatively effect birth weight significantly. So, if you don't feel like working the last few weeks, it certainly won't hurt either you or the baby and will likely help both.

Here is an article that summarizes recent findings. The actual white paper is available on JSTOR if interested.

  • My last teaching day was February 15th.  I had planned it that way, but it turned out I was put on bedrest anyway so it all worked out.  I didn't want to leave in a rush and worry about sub plans etc. so I worked with the replacement teacher for about 3 days team teaching before I left.

  • My current plan is to work up until I go into labor.  My actual paid maternity leave can only be used from delivery date forward.  Only way I can take time off beforehand is if it is under doctor's orders (which I will have to file for st disability) or if I use my own PTO..
