Babies: 6 - 9 Months

WWYD?

LO is 6mths and we just started solids. We started with cereal yesterday and it is going well. This weekend I plan on introducing her first fruit/veggie. I had planned on making her food, but someone had bought me a whole bunch of the tubs of food. So, what would you do with those tubs of food? Use them first?

  • Just check the experation date, as well as recalls on baby food. I can't tell you exactly which ones, but I know a few have recently had recalls.

It's all about what you feel comfortable with. If you feel like its okay then there is nothing wrong with it. Me personally, I chose to feed my LO only foods I have made but I have never been given or offered anything from the store. Don't be alarmed if you baby spits up or has different diapers for a few days. When I took my baby to his 4 month appointment and my pedi discussed solids with me he said that the extra stuff in store bought foods can upset babies stomaches. Nothing wrong with it, just different on their stomaches than homemade

  • I also make my daughter's food but someone gave us a bunch of baby food.  I just put it in the cupboard and use it in an emergency like I ran out of fruit and didn't realize it or something.

  • I use the store bought stuff when we are out.  In response to the 'extra stuff ' in store bought, you need to read the ingredients.  If there is anything other than what the baby food is, don't buy it.  (Citric Acid is fine, that's to prevent browning.)  I don't meant that to sound snarky, I just mean there should not be anything extra in any baby food. :)

  • Our LO's are foster children and we get WIC for them.  I haven't made my own food because we get so much through wic (128 oz/month).  It doesn't bother me to use it and I don't feel like she's eating any "worse" then she would be if I made it.

  • You can keep it as back up in case you lose power or something.
  • I was given a lot of jars as well. We use it when we are out or if I've ran out of home made goodies. I think it's a tad to runny for my preference and my DS.

  • We were given a few jars, and they're all organic (plus!). I actually started DD on them because she hadn't been showing an interest in food and I didn't want to make stuff if she wasn't ready to start eating it. Now that she's loving her food, I'm storing the rest in case we run out or we're going on a day trip or something.
  • I had said I was going to make all of my own baby food, it hasn't happened.  The prepared baby foods have been working well for us...except the bananas, they were pretty gross, so I just give him fresh.

  • I wanted to make my own stuff but between work and the fact that he didn't seem to like what I made much at first, it hasn't happened.  I'm just picky about what I buy.  I have found the Gerber organics to be pretty basic without added ingredients and he always seems to like them.

Now that he's off the stage one purees and moving to a bit more texture, I've started to reintroduce making my own stuff.  Last night I threw some carrots and potatoes that steamed on top of the roast I made into a processor.  During the day though, I will probably continue to use some packaged stuff.  His babysitter likes to have a stash at her house and it's easy to keep in the diaper bag.  I'll just mix in homemade stuff too.  The more he is able to chew and pick up bites the less I expect to use packaged stuff.

  • Totally use what you already have. If it's good and you feel comfortable, use it. This early in the eating game, most of it will go to waste anyway.
