Help, No more BF/Pumping

Im sad to say I have to dry out but i am confusef how this works. I have been down to ep 2-3 times a day for about a month now so I didnt think it would be too hard. I haven't pumped or anything in 4 days now and I am still just about to explode. I am not as miserable as I was on day one but my breast dont really seem like they have gone down at all. Should I pump and empty them or just weigh it out and it will eventulally dry out. Is this how it is supposed to work. i am so confused. But it sure would be nice to be comfortable again. I am not miserable but by no means even remotely comfy. And sleeping is becoming pretty tough. Any advice is appreciated. TIA

Re: Help, No more BF/Pumping

  • If you pump, your breasts are going to produce more milk. I've heard people mention cabbage leaves but am not too sure what to do there.

  • From when I weaned DD, I believe you can pump a little to relieve some pain/pressure maybe save it for mixing with cereal/food. Check kellymom or other sites about it there are strategies like cabbage leaves to try to help decrease production.

  • I went through same thing...its going to hurt for a few days but this is what i did. I didnt pump or express as this will produce more. I kept my back to the shower bc the warm water will also cause you to produce. Take 3 advil every 6 hours and use cold cabbage leaves. I would wash them and put them in a container in the fridge. I then wrapped a leaf around each and wire a sports bra. Change the leafs when wilted. I also wore a sports bra to bed. Hang in there.. Watch for mastisis/take your temp. After a few days the bursting feeling goes away.
  • Try the cabbage leaves.  You should break the veins on them and then put those in your bra.  The cold feels good but the leaves also emit a chemical that will help to dry up your milk.  Good luck.

  • Don't pump! That tells your body that you still want to make milk.

Taking a decongestant is supposed to help because it will dry up anything your body produces, not just mucus.

Use ice packs to relieve the pain, take an anti-inflamatory, like Advil or Aleve, and use cold cabbage leaves to help with engorgement. It will take a few days but you will get relief. I've heard wearing a tight-fitting bra will help you stop producing, too.

I had to stop nursing my first child around nine months because I wasn't producing enough to feed her well. I was engorged for nearly a week but after that I was finally comfortable, although I did seem to still be producing a small amount for months afterwards.

    Hope you feel better!
